community college in Salem,
which neither had a band nor a
colorguard. His decision to trans
fer to the University was final
ized after he received an informa
tion packet about the Oregon
Marching Band.
Todd Zimbelman, director of
Athletic Bands and Associate Di
rector of Bands at the School of
Music, said the colorguard is a
traditional part of the marching
band that has existed under dif
ferent names since the 1920s.
Zimbelman said members
need to have excellent movement
skills and eye-hand coordination
on top of being athletic. Previous
experience on a high school col
orguard team is a plus, Zimbel
man said, but the coaches are
willing to train newcomers too.
Nauman said being able to
work with a team rather than for
individual progress is another
important prerequisite.
Umeda said he was nervous
before his first performance at
Autzen Stadium. Although he
had gathered performance expe
rience in high school, the size of
the crowd was intimidating. Now
his focus is on the performance,
rather than the green and yellow
crowd.
“I really don’t notice the crowd
sometimes,” he said.
Zimbelman said the col
orguard works with pops and
equipment just like a theater
troupe.
“You visually perform just like
you would perform in a theater
on a stage,” he said.
Umeda said he likes traveling
with the marching band because
it gives him a chance to explore
new places with his friends.
I
He said he enjoys practices be
cause they combine dancing with
socializing and having a good
time.
His goal is for the ensemble to
perform at the best possible level
at every game. Taking a wrong
step or dropping equipment hap
pens occasionally, but it is a part
of the experience, he said.
“There won’t be anywhere
where I can do this again,” Ume
da said.

Police have no substantial evi

Anyone with information is en
