UO eager for tourney
■ The No. 10 Ducks on a
roll heading into this
weekend’s Stanford Invite

It’s time to get back to work for
the No. 10 Oregon women’s golf
team.
The Ducks travel down to Stan
ford to take part in the 36th annual
Stanford Invitational that begins
today and runs through Sunday.
It has been three weeks since
the Ducks finished first at the Fall
Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn
State with their three day score of
885, the lowest three-round score
in the history of the women’s golf
program. ~
The convincing East Coast win
excited head coach Renee Baum
gartner and proved that, as she put
it, “the West is best.”
West coast golfers will be on full
display at the Stanford Invitation
al. Of the eighteen teams in the
field, 13 are currently ranked in
the nation’s top 25.
The second-ranked Arizona
Wildcats return to defend their
1998 title after they edged out the
host Cardinal by two strokes a
year ago.
Other ranked teams on hand in
clude No. 4 Arizona State, host
No. 5 Stanford, No. 9 UCLA, No.
12 Pepperdine, No. 13 Tulsa, No.
14 New Mexico State, No. 19 San
lose State, No. 22 New Mexico,
No. 23 Washington.
The field is similar to the NCAA
Fall Preview that the Ducks took
part in on Sept. 13-15, where they
finished in a seventh-place tie.
Oregon hopes to equal or better
that finish this weekend, and
there is a full squad of golfers
whose confidence has been boost
ed by the Penn
State scores.

way on the par
72, 6,154 yard
course will be se
nior Pam Sow
den, who is coming off an individ
ual title at the Nittany Lion
Invitational with her three round
total of 210. In that tournament,
Sowden’s second round score of
68 tied the Oregon all-time indi
vidual score.
Alongside Sowden will be ju
nior Jerilyn White She was the
Ducks top finisher at the Fall Pre
view and placed sixth overall at
Penn State. Heading into the tour
nament, White is second on the
team with a 76.1 average.
A talented senior trio of Angie
Rizzo, Kylie Wilson, and Anika
Heuser will also compete for Ore
gon..
The 54-hole event will feature
five-player teams, and tally the
lowest four scores per team. Com
petition will begin at 8 a.m. on all
three days.
