    Club hockey skates by Bears
■ The Club Sports ice
hockey team opens the
season with a home sweep
of California
By Chris Aster
lor the Emerald
With the football team taking a
bye week and preparing for Ari
zona, University sports fans may
have thought that they also had a
weekend of rest. This was not
the case for the faithful who
showed up at Lane County Ice
Arena on Friday and Saturday
nights to see the Oregon Club
Sports ice hockey team open its
season against the California
Golden Bears.
The Ducks finished 19-5-1 in
1998-99, ending the season with
a heartbreaking overtime loss in
the Pacific-8 Conference Tourna
ment semifinals to Southern Cal
ifornia. Team captain Tyler Shaf
far said getting back to the
postseason is a goal for this sea
son.
“We lost our seniors, but we
have three solid lines, and I
think we’re going to have a good
year,” Shaffar said.
Oregon started this season as
if that loss to the Trojans had
never happened. The Ducks
swept the Bears in two games,
improving
their record to
4-0-1 against
Cal in the last
two seasons.
The Bears,
10-10-1 last
season, were handed a 4-3 defeat
Friday. The game was highlight
ed by the play of Oregon’s Jeff
McGillis, a graduate student
from Ottawa, Ontario. McGillis
lit up the meager Cal defense for
two goals to secure the close win.
Saturday’s game wasn’t nearly
as even, as the Ducks stomped
the Bears in a 5-1 rout. Oregon
treated the crowd to a superb dis
play of both stingy defense and
offensive firepower. Junior goal
tender Josh Hardin spearheaded
the defensive effort with 26
saves, only letting one shot slip
through the wall he essentially
constructed in front of the net.
The Duck offense was defined by
the outstanding play of sopho
more forward Brett Ledder,
whose hat trick helped lead the
win. Shaffar added two goals,
and McGillis also pitched in
with three assists.
The Bears didn’t take their
whupping so well and toward
the end of the third period used
every chance they received to at
tempt to start some sort of alter
cation.
“We kept our cool,” Shaffar
said. “That’s definitely some
thing that’s different from last
year.”
With two wins under their belt
to start off the season, the Ducks
travel south to Arizona State this
weekend to take on the Ice Dev
ils.
“They’re a Division-I team,”
Shaffar said, “so they’re going to
be a big test for us.”
That may be so, but if last
weekend was any indication, it’s
a test that the Ducks are definite
ly ready for.
The Ducks next home game is
Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. against the
UCLA Bruins.

Yankees
capture
pennant
By Ronald Blum
The Associated Press
BOSTON— Fenway’s fans did
n’t scare El Duque and neither did
the Boston Red Sox.
When you’ve fled Cuba — by
raft or yacht, it doesn’t matter —
nothing intimidates you.
On a night many degrees re
moved from his island homeland
in temperature and locale, Her
nandez wrapped up the New
York Yankees’ record 36th Amer
ican League pennant in his typi
cal Mr. Cool fashion. The MVP
pitched them past the Red Sox 6
1 Monday night to win the AL
Championship Series 4-1.
Less than 1 1/2 years after
making his major league debut,
he’s 4-0 in postseason play with
a 0.97 ERA, nearly halfway to
Whitey Ford’s Yankees record of
10 postseason wins.
Think that’s impressive?
Toying with major league hit
ters as if they were kids on sand
lots, he’s allowed four earned
runs in 37 innings.
Nothing seems to rattle him.
Not the taunts of Red Sox fans
or the threat of debris flying on
the field.
Not falling behind 3-0 in the
count. He’s just setting up th*
batter — with more windups
than most teams have pitchers.
Not questions about his age - is
he 30 or 34? He answers only to
Yankees owner George Stein
brenner.
Not the debate over whether
he left Cuba on a raft or in a luxu
ry boat. His answers are as hard
to figure as his pitches.
On a staff that struggled for
consistency at times, he became
the anchor, never going more
than three starts without a win
after mid-May.
With all the concern about
Roger Clemens’ legs, Andy Pet
titte’s mind, David Cone’s arm
and Hideki Irabu’s gut, Hernan
dez was the constant: Just give
him the ball and let him pitch.
Measure 20-25
Safer Communities
What is an Income Tax
Surcharge?
Measure 20-25 is a proposed Lane County Charter Amendment designed to fund prevention,
intervention, and enforcement, and address gaps in the county-wide community safety system.
Each Lane County community would receive part of the money to use for its own safety programs
and services.
Measure 20-25 would authorize an 8% surcharge on state personal and corporate income and
excise taxes. To figure out how much you would pay, look at last year’s tax return and multiply
the amount on line 43 on Oregon Form 40, or line 23 on Oregon Form 40S, by .08. This is
deductible if you itemize on your federal tax return.
