Harnden was in a tie for ninth
entering into Tuesday’s round
and finished with a total of 222.
Two Ducks ended their final
rounds in 21st place. Senior team
co-captain Ryan Lavoie and
sophomore Aaron Byers each shot
225 totals.
Lavoie began the day in 28th,
but he jumped up seven places
when he shot a 73 for the final
round.
Byers slipped two places after
finishing the day with a 3-over
par round of 75.

Nosier was pleased with the
play of his team during the fall,
but he still feels that his players
have room to improve.
“I was positive with progress
that we had in the fall,” Nosier
said. “At any tournament, we had
as many as four new faces. That
was important because those kids
get the experience they’ll need lat
er on.”

Closer to home
Apparently, on-line criticism isn’t hard to come by.
Emerald sportswriter/ columnist Jeff Smith also re
ceived sincere feedback for his anti-UCLA column
(ODE, Oct. 4).
One contributor called Smith a “poor, frustrated
Oregon student.”
Another Bruins’ fan compared him to L.A. Times’
columnists Mike Downey and Bill Plashcke, writing
— correctly — “He has already picked up the knack
for presenting his prejudice as fact and anecdotally
involving himself in the story.”
Cal calling receivers
California played without its No. 1 running back in
their 38-28 loss to Brigham Young last weekend.
Not that Marcus Fields, the conference's sixth-best
rusher last season, wasn’t playing. He was.
But he was there as a wide receiver.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior may not have had
any experience at receiver, but that’s where he lined
up against the Cougars. His debut was decent, as he
caught three passes for 55 yards.
One reason for the switch was the emergence of
freshman Joe Igber, who validated coach Tom Hol
moe’s decision by rushing for 116 yards.
The second reason: Cal’s receivers need help.
The Bears rank last in passing offense and passing
efficiency through five games, at 142 yards per game
and a completion percentage of almost 42 percent.
