Check your WtM Volleyball Continued from Page7A home, I came down and ap proached Cathy and told her I was interested in transferring,” Mazza said. “She really helped me out and introduced me to the team and really talked to me about my options. In late March, I decided that I wanted to trans fer.” Five months later, Mazza was in Eugene. The timing of the move put the former Southland Conference All-Tournament team member in a hectic situation. Upon joining her new team, Mazza had two weeks to adjust before the start of the season. “Spending every single day with each other for more than eight hours really bonds a group of people,” Mazza said. “Just working with them one-on-one all day long really helps you get to know your teammates.” Halfway through her first sea son as a Duck, Mazza has yet to grow into the player she was at Texas-Arlington. Nevertheless, her presence has been felt. As of Oct. 3, her season hitting per centage was .249, and she ranked third on the team in kills with 105. “To be honest, we really didn’t know what we were going to get out of her,” Nelson said. “We have been totally surprised with what we’ve seen; I think she’s a really good player and has the potential to be a very, very good player.” Unlike Mazza’s situation in Texas, Oregon is not winning games right now. The Ducks have dropped their last 10 matches and have yet to win a conference match. This doesn’t bother Mazza though. She would rather have the support of her family and friends than she would a win ning record. And she feels close to her team. Mazza’s roommate is mid dle blocker Laura Norton. She also is close friends with outside hitter Monique Tobbagi, who is currently out of action with an injury. “I’m very pleased with my de cision to transfer,” Mazza said. “All the girls are very supportive, and I really like my coaches. I couldn’t be any happier. “We’re really frustrated right now as a team, but it helps that we care about each other and we’re there to support each other in this tough time. All of us be lieve that we can turn it around, and that really helps.” But like her teammates, Mazza also wants to win games. When the team travels to Corvallis to take on the Beavers tonight at 7 p.m., Oregon will again put their attitudes to the test as they search for a way to beat a Pacific 10 Conference rival. Oregon is 41-29 against Ore gon State in the all-time series, but the Beavers have won seven of 10 of the last outings. Redshirt freshman Michele Solomon leads the Oregon State defense with a conference lead ing 1.44 blocks per game. The of fense rests in the hands of Sarah Bjeldanes, who has 227 kills in 14 matches and is fourth in the Pac-10 in kills per game (4.35). “We should not have a prob lem getting up,” Nelson said. “It should not be an issue with us not being emotional or ready to play. “It’s Civil War time, baby.” We’re singin’ in the rain...
