they both expect the best.”
Baysa has always expected the
best of herself as well, ever since
she picked up soccer at only 4
years old. She attended high school
in Oak Harbor, Wash., where she
lettered in basketball, track and ten
nis to go along with soccer in her il
lustrious prep career.
Looking back at her high school
years, Baysa proclaimed her
biggest accomplishment was win
ning the female athlete of the year
award at Oak Harbor as only a ju
nior, a recognition almost exclu
sively reserved for senior athletes.
“It was a big accomplishment
because it summarized my
achievements athletically as well
as academically,” Baysa said.
The award was one of many that
lured college coaches to her. She
was offered scholarships to Pur
due and Virginia but chose to stay
in the Northwest at Oregon for a
variety of reasons.
“Came down to visit Oregon,
and I liked the campus,” Baysa
said. “It wasn’t too big, it wasn’t
too small and it wasn’t too far from
home. So I could go home when I
wanted, and my mom could see
me play.
“I liked the team a lot too, and I
couldn’t see myself on the East
Coast.”

There is no time like the present,
and now Baysa assumes the leader
ship role as only a sophomore. Stef
fen has great confidence in her dri
ve and has seen her emerge into a
leader in a short time span.
“She has gotten a lot stronger
both physically and psychologi
cally,” Steffen said. “That is
proven in the fact that she was
made a captain this season. ”
Oregon Notes

touchdown against Nevada, has been hindered by a
recurring foot problem and probably won’t be avail
able for tailback duties either.
The assortment of absences leaves Latimer and
fifth-string Brown as Bellotti’s only options at tail
back.
And Latimer, a senior who has stepped in for in
jured teammates on several occasions, suffered an
ankle injury in the first half of last weekend’s Wash
ington loss.
Amundson participated in four games this season,
rushing for 48 yards on 13 carries, including a touch
down. Because he played in more than three games,
he won t automatically be granted a redshirt year and
will have to petition for medical hardship.
More injury news: Defensive end Saul Patu is
cleared to play after missing three weeks with a knee
injury.
But offensive tackle A1 Cotton and kicker Nathan
Villegas are not cleared.
However, Bellotti reported that Villegas practiced
this week — even with a tom anterior cruciate liga
ment. On Monday, he connected on six straight field
goals from between 35-40 yards. Bellotti said he is
optimistic Villegas will play this season.
Seeking revenge?
All the buzz about last week’s Bellotti-Rick
Neuheisel controversy has been transferred this
week to Ducks defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti
and his former boss UCLA head coach Bob Toledo.
With Aliotti as their defensive coordinator last sea
son, the Bruins ranked No. 99 in total defense among
Division I-A schools. So after UCLA failed to stop
Miami late last season, Toledo publicly blasted Aliot
ti for the Bruins’ defensive struggles.
Aliotti took exception to Toledo’s remarks, re
signed and returned to his old post in Eugene.
Not surprisingly, neither Toledo nor Aliotti is ea
ger to discuss the matter.
“I’m not even thinking about it,” Toledo said.
Aliotti told the Los Angeles Times, “It’s not Nick
Aliotti against UCLA.”
Aliotti coached at Oregon from 1988-1994. Before
that, he was offensive coordinator at Chico State
from 1984-87, where Bellotti was the head coach.
While the Aliotti-Bellotti tandem racked up yards
at Chico, Toledo was wearing green in Eugene as the
Ducks’ offensive coordinator.
The Bruins’ current offensive coordinator, Chico
State-alum Alan Borges, directed the Duck offense in
1995.
Under his guidance, current Duck Brandon
McLemore’s brother, Cristin, produced the second
best single-season receiving numbers in school his
tory.
Not surprisingly, Oregon defenders are eager to ad
dress the Borges issue.
They possess a lot of the formations that we’ve
seen, senior safety Michael Fletcher said, “especially
the seniors that were here when Coach Borges was.
We should be pretty familiar with what they got.”
