Construction interrupts routine at journalism school ■ Now entering its fourth phase, construction on Allen Hall is due to end in March By Edward Yuen Oregon Daily Emerald The fences were hung by the hall with care, in hopes that construc tion soon would be there. Students who have classes in Allen Hall this term will find the lawn on the east side of the build ing, the bike racks and the parking zone are closed to access. A new entrance and atrium is be ing built at the School of Journalism and Communication in Allen Hall. Dean Tim Gleason said the im provements mark the fourth phase of the reconstruction of Allen Hall. In previous phases, a student ser vices center, a video production lab and a reading room were built in the space formerly occupied by University Printing Services, which moved out in 1996. When the construction is com pleted in mid-March, the dean’s of fice will move from the second floor to the first floor and a hall of achievement will also be built in the renovated area. The new en trance connects the two wings of the building on the first floor and leads students to the Willis S. Duniway Reading Room, the John L. Hulteng Student Service Center, the Carolyn S. Chambers Electron ic Media Center and the Marcia Aaron Leonard Student Lounge. Outside the building, a courtyard will be built and the ramp that leads to the first floor will be less steep to improve accessibility for students with special needs, and other ramps will be added to the building. The overall landscape will be preserved, and parking spaces near the build ing will not be lost. In addition, a presentation room will be built on the second floor and a new digital media lab will re place the news-editing lab on the third floor. The dark room on the third floor will be upgraded to be come a digital darkroom. “It really is bringing the facility up to support teaching in the 21st century,” Gleason said. He said new technology will improve teaching and media production in the school, and help prepare stu dents to work in the new era of net work and interconnected media. The renovation is funded by pri vate moneys, such as donations from alumni, Gleason said. He also said other renovations in the build ing will be performed when the school has raised $500,000. After that money has been raised, the state of Oregon will match that do nation to fund other renovations. “I am excited to see the outcome of the construction,” said senior journalism major Deveney Felt. “I thought the building is in need of repair.” Students will not be disturbed by the construction noise. Gleason said most of the construction has been scheduled outside class hours. But not everyone welcomes the construction. “I hate it. It is incredibly inconve nient,” said Petra Hagen, secretary of graduate studies in the journal ism school. “It is loud and dusty, and I cannot go from one spot of the building on the first floor to the oth er without going upstairs.” Hagen said she has to spend a quarter of each working day, on av erage, directing students to the Duniway Center. She said she was forced to leave work early once be cause of the construction noise and welcomes the construction’s end. Catharine Kendall Emerald Construction is underway at Allen Hall.
