In tough field, Ducks claim third ■ Led by freshman Tara Struyk, Oregon finishes third at the Notre Dame Invitational By Jeff Smith Oregon Daily Emerald Tom Heinonen was eager to see his inexperienced group of run • ners compete against higher ranked competition at the Notre r Dame Invitational on Friday. What he saw was his Oregon’s women’s cross country team trav el to South Bend, Ind., and place an encouraging third place with a total of 115 points, finishing be hind favorites No. 14 Notre Dame and No. 13 Missouri, which fin ished with 57 and 73 points, re spectively. With freshman Amy Nickerson — winner of the Clackamas Invi tational on Sept. 25 — back in Eu gene nursing a mild Achilles ag gravation, it was time for another highly touted newcomer to shine. It turned out to be freshman Tara Struyk, wlio followed her third-place finish in Clackamas with a team-leading eighth-place performance at Notre Dame, tak ing 17 minutes, 38 seconds to complete the 5,000-meter race. The Ducks also had two other scorers place in the top-15 over all. Freshman Eri Macdonald placed 10th at 17:44, and junior Rhiannon Glenn finished 15th at 17:54. “Tara ran a good, strong race and was fifth most of the way be fore she got passed in the kick to finish,” Heinonen said. “Eri got out great early, then passed every one near her finish. Rhiannon said she felt pretty listless and stayed around 15th place throughout the race.” Other Duck finishers included juniors Kylee Wells (36th, 18:20) and Katie Crabb (46th, 18:29), freshman Erinn Gulbrandsen (48th, 18:30) and sophomore Pam Fields (53rd, 18:35). Crabb, who pulled out of the Clackamas race due to a mild Achilles aggrava tion, was in line for fifth place with one mile to go before her taped ankle cut off her blood circulation and forced her to slow down, dropping her to 46th. Finishing first overall as ex pected was two-time All-Ameri can Joanna Deeter of Notre Dame with a time of 16:52. Rounding out the top five were Anna Gullingsrud of Missouri (17:16), Alison Klemmer of Notre Dame (17:21), Dontilla Mwei of Eastern Michigan (17:32) and Katie Mey er of Missouri (17:33). Oregon’s third-place showing helps propel it toward the Pre NCAA Invitational on Oct. 16 in Bloomington, Ind., which fea tures many of the country’s top teams and runners in an excellent test for the Ducks. . “We had some encouraging signs today,” Heinonen said. “But we have to get everyone going well on the same day. Our goal now is to get Amy and Katie healthy and everyone fit and healthy for pre-nationals.” UO Soccer Continued from Page 1 past the outstretched arms of Matador goalkeeper Jenny Willemse. Any time the Matador attack crossed the midfield line toward their goal, the Duck defense, led by seniors Stacey Hebert and Car rie McLanahan, quickly returned the ball back to the offense. At halftime Oregon led only 1-0 on the scoreboard but led 14-2 in shots on goal and seemed well on its way to a .500 record. All' of that changed 10 minutes into the second half as Matador ' forward Erin Broadwell came up with a loose ball and rocketed it past Duck goalkeeper Amanda Fox into the upper right-hand cor ner of the net. “Once we gave them that goal, they started to believe in them selves,” Steffen said. “When they see that the score is tied, they started saying, ‘Hey, we can win this thing,’ and it gave them life and momentum.” After the score, the Matadors seemed like a different team and took advantage of their few shots on goal. In the 21st minute, CSU Northridge freshman Gentry Green dribbled the ball past a slid ing McLanahan and kicked it into the right side of the net. On the third goal, with nine minutes left, Green received the ball in the left corner and ricocheted a shot off the right goal post into the net past a confused Fox. On Friday, Oregon beat visiting Auburn 4-0, thanks in large part to speedy sophomore Chalise Baysa, who excited the 479 fans on hand with her three first-half goals. Baysa’s hat trick led a well balanced attack that included Oregon goalkeepers Amanda Fox and Sarah Peters combining to record the Ducks’ second shutout of the season. Senior Jori Gangnes scored the Ducks’ fourth goal with spectacular dribbling in which she sidestepped Auburn defend ers and launched a shot that flew inches over Auburn goalie Piper Craig’s fingers and into the net.
