Bank opens for gays
PENSACOLA, Fla. — The first
bank to target a national homo
sexual market has opened its
doors in Pensacola and will begin
doing business Oct. 11 on the In
ternet.
G&L Bank — the initials stand
for gay and lesbian — is among a
small number of Internet-focused
banks and the first to obtain a
thrift charter for Internet lending,
founder Steven Dunlap said
Wednesday. Its sole walk-in office
began operating last week.
“Homophobia runs rampant in
the banking industry,” said G.
Kay Griffin, the bank’s chair
woman, president and chief exec
utive officer. “Many banks think
a couple needs to have a marriage
certificate to show that they are
creditworthy.”
The Internet operations will be
open around the clock, seven
days a week.
Bank investors David Rich
bourg and Norman Ricks, both re
tired businessmen, were the first
same-sex couple to open a joint
account.
“It was the first time we were
able to go into a bank as a couple
and be treated with the same re
spect that other couples have
been treated in the past,” Rich
bourg said.
He and Ricks have been togeth
er for 26 years.
“Every time we bought proper
ty together or applied for a loan, it
was always candy-coated that we
were business partners, and in
some areas, it was frowned upon
that we were borrowing together,”
Richbourg said.
The bank is capitalized at about
$19 million with 70 stockholders.
Demographic surveys suggest
about 21 million homosexuals
live in the United States with
$800 billion in spending power.
About 9.2 million gays and les
bians regularly use the Internet.

O’Malley bites the dust
NEW YORK — NBC’s “Mike
O’Malley Show” earned a grim
distinction Thursday by becom
ing the first of the season’s three
dozen new series to be canceled.
A terse announcement from
NBC declared an immediate pro
duction halt for the sitcom, with
no more episodes scheduled for
broadcast. “O’Malley” had aired
twice, with this week’s episode
losing one-third of the audience
that watched its lead-in show,
“Will & Grace.”
Repeats of other NBC comedies
will air in the former “O’Malley”
slot (9:30 to 10 p.m. EDT Tuesday)
following the conclusion of base
ball playoff coverage, NBC said.
Starring actor-comedian O’Mal
ley as a 30-ish bachelor trying to
behave like an adult, the series
had been troubled from the out
set. The pilot was rewritten and
reshot this summer, but still got
dismal reviews. Its Sept. 21 debut
shared an inauspicious 54th place
in the Nielsen ratings.
In a statement Thursday, O’
Malley thanked his crew and said
he was heartbroken by NBC’s de
cision. “Then again,” he said, “I
always wanted to be No. 1, and
now I can say I am No. 1 to be can
celed.”
