The
Big Wu’
By Yael Menahem
Oregon Daily Emerald
Never heard of the Big Wu? It’s
a band from Minneapolis who’s
debut CD, “Tracking Buffalo
Through the Bathtub,” will ap
peal to any Grateful Dead, blue
grass, funk, even country and pop
fans out there.
The 10-track CD, with the de
but song entitled “Silcanturnito
va,” will give listeners an idea of
the free-style jam sessions that lay
ahead. “Kangaroo,” a song with
poppy and downright happy
lyrics, will make listeners want to
dance.
Yet, the band also shows a dif
ferent side with three semi
acoustic ballads. “Puerto Rico” is
mellow with a hint of twang,
while “Precious Hands”-is beau
tifully-written and accompanied
by Latin guitar melodies.
Most of the songs are deeply
rooted in folk, like the last track
“Red Anthem” which runs for al
most nine minutes and leaves lis
teners with an upbeat feeling.
The band members have paid
their dues, performing at Min
neapolis’ Cabooze Nightclub for
two-and-a-half years, since form
ing in 1992. Recently, they’ve re
ceived more exposure, signing
with an independent record label
and appearing in the H.O.R.D.E.
music festival.
Like the Grateful Dead, the Big
Wu has a following of dedicated
fans who enjoy dancing for hours
to live funk-jams and are treated
to unexpectedly long shows filled
with cover songs and “songs writ
ten and re-written every show” by
the band, according to the CD
cover.
Luckily, a new audience can
catch them when they play at
Good Times on October 6. Their
debut CD was released September
28.
