News briefs Applications available for Eugene citizen committee Applications are now available for residents interested in serving on a citizen committee that will suggest compensation for the Eu gene mayor and City Council, who currently serve without pay. This seven-member body will draft a proposal specifying the level of pay the mayor and City Council members should receive. The recommendation will be presented to Eugene voters as an amendment to the Eugene Char ter at the May 2000 election. The application deadline is Oct. 8. The City Council will in terview candidates in mid-Octo ber. Appointments will be made on Oct. 27. Applications are available at the City Manager’s Office at: City Hall, 777 Pearl St., Room 105, or by calling 682-5010. Candidates nominated for Board of Higher Education Gov. John Kitzhaber nominated two Oregon executives and a col lege student to fill three vacancies on the state Board of Higher Edu cation. Nominee Leslie Lehmann is the executive director of the Ore gon Forest Resources Institute. Nominee Bill Williams is presi dent and chief executive of Bear Creek Corporation and is on the board of directors of its parent or ganization, the Shaklee Corpora tion. Both have been nominated to four-year terms ending in 2003. Nominee Shawn Hempel is a student at the Oregon Institute of Technology majoring in soft ware engineering technology and has been nominated for a two year term, ending in 2001. Their appointments need to be ratified by the Senate. If ratified, all three will begin serving this fall. Kitzhaber also reappointed Board President Tom Imeson to a second four-year term.
