He’s a power runner who sees the field well, sets up blocks and just is fun to watch. “If I were an offensive lineman, I’d want to block for Reuben Droughns.” Droughns’ bruising style has prompted comparisons to the Denver Broncos’ All-Pro tailback Terrell Davis. But Droughns brushes those aside. “A lot of people have told me that, but those are big shoes,” Droughns said. “Terrell Davis is a great running back, and he’s ac complished a lot in the league. And I haven’t made it that far. ” So what is your style, Reuben? “I think for any running back, it’d be hard for 'em to describe their style,” Droughns said. “When you’re running the ball, you don’t know what you’re do ing. You’re just trying to gain yards and see the other side of the end zone.” What has stopped Droughns on occasion through Oregon’s first three games is the lingering anxi ety surrounding his surgically re paired right leg. “I do feel good, but there are some things I can’t do,” said Droughns, who led the nation in rushing in 1997 at Merced College, a California junior college. “[The injury] is in the back of my mind, and I’m thinking about it so I’m saying, ‘Oh, no, no, no. Don’t do that.’ But I’m slowly get ting over that.” Bellotti agreed with Droughns. “He does look better every If I were an offensive lineman, I’d want to block for Reuben Droughns. Mike Bellotti J ? Oregon head coach game,” Bellotti said. “He’s return ing to the form he was by midsea son last year.” Combine Droughns’ return to health with an A.J. Feeley-led passing game that has been consis tently spectacular, and the Tro jans’ Pac-10 pacing defense could be in trouble against the Ducks. Droughns is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s gonna be a good matchup,” said Droughns, who dreamt of playing for USC as a child growing up in Anaheim, Calif. “We’re gonna have to work harder to get what we want. I know they’re gonna be flying to the ball. ” As for Trojan tailback Sultan McCullough’s assessment that USC “will win,” Droughns is not so sure. But he isn’t going to give the Trojans any extra motivation. “They might win,” Droughns said, “but, hey, we’re gonna see. “We’re not gonna let 'em walk away easily, I can tell you that much.” And what Bellotti and other Ducks tell us is that Oregon has not had a tailback quite like Reuben Droughns before. “As far as I’ve played with here, there’s been some good [running backs],” said Moen, who blocked for Saladin McCullough earlier in his career. “But Reuben has to rank right up there. ” The Duck record books reveal that Droughns already does.
