Conference action heats up By Jeff smith Oregon Daily Emerald UCLA (2-1) at Stanford (2-1,2-0) Snooze... UCLA and Stan ford... boring, right? Not this year. The Cardinal, predicted to fin ish neck-in-neck with hopeless Washington State for last place in the Pacific-10 Conference, sud denly find themselves eying the number six. Six, of course, being the magic number of wins Stanford needs to clinch the conference title and a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. A win this week against de fending-league champion UCLA would give Stanford a 3-0 Pac-10 record for the first time since 1971, the first year it went to the Rose Bowl. After Texas crushed Stanford 69-17 in its season opener, the Cardinal has turned the Pac-10 upside down with convincing wins against Washington St. (54 17) and preseason-favorite Ari zona (50-22). Last week against Arizona, Stanford produced 578 yards in total offense and 364 yards pass ing, both Pac-10 highs this sea son. ‘This, in my opinion, is the toughest test for our defense to date,” UCLA head coach Bob Toledo told CNNSI. UCLA will likely be without redshirt freshman quarterback Cory Paus, who stole the starting job from junior Drew Bennet. In UCLA’s 35-21 win over Fresno State last week, Paus severely bruised his neck and chest on a sack. If Paus is unable to play, Bennet will reassume his starting role. Last week, he was 12 of 24 for 176 yards and two touchdowns. But if UCLA can’t stop Stan ford quarterback Todd Husack and company, then an unlikely Pac-10 contender may emerge. Arizona (2-2, 0-1) at Washington State (0-3,0-1) Wildcats’ fans can pretty much forget the smell of roses after Stanford whooped Arizona last week. Wild Cat tailback Trung Canidate, wide receiver Dennis Northcutt and quarterback Ortege Jenkins will be out for blood this weekend to regain some much needed confidence. Washington State stands in the way. The Cougars are coming off an embarrassment as well after falling to Idaho on their home turf, and the thought of an angry Arizona does not bode well for the Pac-lO’s doormat. “This is the worst of worst times,” Cougar head coach Mike Price told The Register-Guard. “We are at the bottom of the bar rel.” Arizona State (1-1) at California (1-1) California will seem like heav en to Arizona State after it was booed out of Sun Devil Stadium a week ago in an ego-deflating 35-7 loss to New Mexico State. The Sun Devils, favored by 26, lost by 28 points to a Big West team to further fuel speculation about the demise of the Pac-10. For the Golden Bears, seeing the red-and-yellow Sun Devil jer seys will be a relief after watch ing the red and white of Nebras ka run all over them in a 45-0 hammering last Saturday. Game of the Week Colorado (2-1) at Washinoton (0-2) By Jelf Smith Oregon Daily Emerald The bark of the Dawgs has been much bigger than the bite. Rick Neuheisal is still winless in Seattle and is now facing a must-win situation against his former Buffaloes. Burdened with the nation’s toughest schedule, the Huskies have succumbed to Brigham Young and Air Force and a loss Saturday would force them to go 6-2 in Pac-10 play to become bowl-elgible. Colorado has been eying Sept. 25 ever since Neuheisal bolted from Boulder and left many for mer players feeling betrayed. New Colorado head coach Gary Barnett came from North western and immediately jumped in on the Neuheisal bashing. Before the season, Barnett was asked what he would be sporting on the si delines and his sly reply was, “It’s not going to be a sweater vest.” Barnett also was one of the coaches who accused Neuheisal of intentionally breaking recruit ing rules this past winter. “The truth of the matter is all I did was create an opportunity {fpr Barnett] to get the job he’s al ways wanted,” Neuheisal told The Register-Guard. The real truth is that the Buf faloes have two more wins than the Huskies and are confident that they can add to their total. Their confidence is backed up by their history, as Colorado is 4 0 at Husky Stadium. And in the 1996 Holiday Bowl, a Neuheisal led No. 8 Buffaloes team beat Washington 33-21. Colorado recovered from its season-opening blowout loss to Colorado State with easy wins over San Jose State and Kansas. In fact, the two lopsided victories marked the first time since 1923 that Colorado has put 50 points on the scoreboard in back-to back games. Quarterbacks Mike Moschetti of Colorado and Marques Tuia sosopo of Washington look to add some much-needed bite to what already shapes up as a heavyweight showdown.
