City skies flier friendly
| ■ Community needs lead to
j non-stop airline service from
I Eugene to the southwest
l By Felicity Ayles
| for the Emerald
The skies above the city are be
| coming a little bit more friendly
| this fall. The Eugene Municipal
\ Airport has opened its doors to
| another airline as it opens access
| to the southwest corner of the
country.
On Sept. 11, America West Air
lines began non-stop service from
Phoenix to Eugene and vice versa,
in an effort to meet the growing
needs of the Eugene community,
said Michael Boggs, Eugene Air
port manager.
“We looked at the community’s
needs and 70 percent of the com
munity travels to the west and
southwest U.S.,” he said. Until
now, the Eugene airport had no
service feeding into a hub in that
area. America West has two main
locations, or hubs, where their
flights originate: Phoenix and Las
Vegas.
The flights in and out of Eugene
connect through the two hubs to
reach other destinations. Current
ly, flights are only available to
Phoenix but an America West
spokeswoman said they hope to
expand flights to Las Vegas in the
future.
Boggs said the expansion is a
positive move for the Eugene air
port.
“This connects us to the 79 oth
er markets that America West
serves,” he said. “We’re not just
looking for any airline, we want
one to meet the community’s
needs.”
The competition among air
lines created by the addition of
America West is another positive
aspect, he said. It requires airlines
to set their prices competitively
and causes companies to be more
sensitive to customers.
“It gives customers another op
tion in terms of getting where they
want to go,” he said. “Without
that, we’d end up with a monop
oly.”
In addition to Phoenix, Boggs
said the airport is looking to ex
pand with non-stop service to San
Jose, Calif., and Los Angeles to
meet customer demand.
Patty Nowack, spokeswoman
for America West, said the airline
is currently in a growth phase.
“We are expanding frequencies
to other markets that are looking
for additional service,” she said.
America West, though new to
Eugene, has had service to Port
land for years. Depending on the
success of the Eugene venture,
Nowack said flights to Las Vegas
may soon be in the Eugene air
port’s future.
“We are adding routes to exist
ing markets and pursuing oppor
tunities as they come up,” she
said.
Harvest rules may harm fish

GRANTS PASS— A state-ap
pointed panel’s findings that Ore
gon logging rules don’t go far
enough to allow the governor’s
salmon recovery plan to succeed
sharply increases the pressure on
private timber owners to cut less.
“It’s one thing when the envi
ros say you need big change,” said
David Bayles of the Pacific Rivers
Council, an environmental group.
“It’s quite something else when
the consensus team appointed on
a bipartisan basis and is officially
reporting to the state of Oregon
says, ‘Folks, it's time for big
change.’”
The seven-member Indepen
dent Multidisciplinary Science
Team was appointed by Gov.
John Kitzhaber, a Democrat, and
Senate President Brady Adams
and House Speaker Lynn Snod
grass, both Republicans. It re
viewed the impact of the Oregon
Forest Practices Act on
Kitzhaber’s Oregon Plan for
restoring dwindling salmon runs.
The report found that state log
ging practices fail to adequately
prevent erosion from clearcuts
that chokes spawning beds.
The scientists also said that log
gers need to preserve more large
trees along streams and in
clearcuts that will eventually fall
into the water to create pools
where fish rest and hide, and to
assure fish can swim upstream.
The Forest Practices Act fails
because it focuses too much on
specific sites and actions, and not
enough on the broad landscape,
the scientists said.
