Ducks gearing up for tough schedule ■ Coming off a shaky 2-4 preseason, Oregon looks to power to the top of the Pac-10 By Brett Williams for the Emerald Erratic? Inconsistent? Either of these words fit the Oregon women’s soccer team dur ing its first six games of the pre season. The Ducks (2-4) looked sharp in their season-opening win at San Francisco, but they were unable to win again until a 2-1 victory over North Carolina-Charlotte ended a four-game skid. “Our preseason has basically been three good, three bad,” Ore gon head coach Bill Steffen said. The Ducks’ first game of the season was an impressive win. San Francisco’s young team was no match for the Ducks, as Oregon forward Chalise Baysa scored just 12 minutes into the game. For ward Erin Anderson put the game away with, two goals in the sec ond half. Anderson and Baysa said the San Francisco game was Oregon’s best performance so far. "They came out hard and we got a little down, but we bounced back and finished the job,” An derson said. “Everyone clicked and every one had fun,” Baysa added. But Oregon played like a differ ent team in losses to San Jose State, St. Mary’s and Davidson. The loss to Davidson may have hurt the most for Oregon, as it tt Our preseason has basically been three good, three bad. Bill Steffen Women’s soccer head coach 1-n watched the Division I-AA team escape with a 2-1 victory. “The first 15 minutes we played tremen dous, but we didn’t score and we pan icked,” Steffen said. “No one could question that we were the better team, but the better team doesn’t always win.” No one could question that the Ducks next opponent, nationally ranked Wake Forest, was the more talented team. The Demon Deacons return eight starters from last season’s NCAA-qualifying team. Oregon pushed Wake Forest to its limit before succumbing. Freshman forward Julie McLellan almost gave the Ducks the lead with a shot off the crossbar with 20 minutes left. “That was a great game to watch,” Steffen said. “We were the better team in the first half but couldn’t get the win.” The loss ignited a fire in Ore gon’s players, who responded with a 2-1 victory over UNC-Char ..*. Freshman goalkeeper Jeanine Norstad makes a no-look save during practice. Scott Barnett/Emerald lotte. Baysa and Allyssa White provided the scoring for the Ducks, who relied on two saves from goalkeeper Amanda Fox to withstand the Lady 49ers’ upset bid. Fox and Baysa were selected to the all-Wake Forest/Nike Invita tional team for their perfor mances. Steffen said the Ducks need to convert on more of their scoring opportunities in order to improve their record. “Against UNC-Charlotte, we converted on our chances and came away with the win,” Steffen said. “We need to maintain our self-confidence and finish better. “If we play like we have the last two games, we’ll be just fine.” Oregon has remaining noncon ference games against Idaho, Port land, Auburn and California State Northridge before its grueling Pacific-10 Conference schedule starts Oct. 8. One of the Ducks goals is to jump into the upper echelon of the Pac-10 this season, but it won’t be easy. “All four California schools and Washington will be our toughest league opponents; they were all in the [NCAA] tournament last year,” Steffen said. “The other half of the Pac-10 is competitive among themselves, and everyone’s goal in the bottom half is to get into the upper half... and into the [NCAA] tournament.” Upcoming Schedule Sept. 22; Portland, 3 p.m. Oct. 1; Auburn, 3 p.m. Oct. 3: California State-Northridge, 1 p.m. Oct. 8: Stanford, 3 p.m. Oct. 10: California, 1 p.m. Oct, 16: © Oregon State, 2 p.m. Oct. 22: ©Washington State, 2 p.m, Oct. 24: ©Washington, noon Oct. 29: USC, 3 p.m. Oct. 31: UCLA, 1p.m. Nov. 5: © Arizona State, 7 p.m. Nov. 7: ©Arizona, 1 p.m. V NoCmni Necessary For over 22 years Track Town Pizza has been a CAMPUS TRADITION and Track Town has the best deal on the tastiest pizza in town! 086900 V v' Remember our $10 after 10 special 1-3 toppings fora medium pizza Student Special A cheese orpepperoni mediidSfelp large $795 $Q95 484-2799 w We Deliver! ‘Everybody’s Favorite Pie!” CAMPUS LOCATION: 1809 FRANKLIN BLVD We Deliver! $10 minimum for free delivery
