Cycling Continued from Page 1 models — the younger folks teaching the older folks,” he said. Niles is no stranger when it comes to advocating bicycle rid ing on campus. The Tandem Taxi Program, which began spring term 1997, is also his brainchild. That transportation service for University students is the “only program of its kind in the world,” he said. By the beginning of fall term 1999, he hopes to have another trans portation service implemented on campus. Called Pedi Cab, this tricycle with a cart will pro vide transportation for those who can’t ride a bike. Niles’ involvement with transportation stems from his belief that it shapes lives. He also thinks Eugene could be a lot more proactive with its in volvement in promoting choic es. He admits that the new TransPlan, devised by the Lane Council of Governments in May 1999, has some great goals, but he believes it is lacking ways to ^ My interest is encouraging bicycles and walking. David Niles UO bike coordinator implement them. The city is building more roads because “it conceded that the public is not ready to make changes,” Niles said. Though this may ease con gestion in the short run, it will have no long-term effects, he conceded. Niles said four percent of trips made in Eugene are on bicycles, bus rides constitute less than 2 percent and cars make up more than 86 percent. “We are in serious danger of de grading the environment and quality of life by our transporta tion choices,” Niles said. “It’s up to us to decide what kind of world to live in.” 006814 “= Learn How To Save A Life American Red Cross training in First Aid and Adult CPR $15 Fee Includes 4 Hour Class • Instruction Booklet • Certificate of Instruction July_ 21 Weds August. 4 Weds I I Weds 18 Weds 4:00-8:00 First Aid 4:00-8.00 400-800 400-800 Adult CPR Infant/Child First Aid • Health Center Cafeteria • $ 15.00 • Current CPR card needed for American Red Cross First Aid Class Register Early 346- 2770 Sponsored by the Health Center Health Education Progrant Looking for a scholarship to support study or research abroad in 2000-2001?
