Giving new Doctors’ CD a spin might make you sick By Sara Jarrett Oregon Daily Emerald The success of songs “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes” put the Spin Doctors’ al bum “Pocket Full of Kryptonite” on the flash-in-the-pan shelf in 1991, and they haven’t left that spot since. Not even close. The New York City group should have stopped after two subsequent attempts at fame flopped. Both albums “Turn It Upside Down,” released in 1994, and “You’ve Got to Believe in Something,” released in 1996, “were almost ignored by the pub lie,” according to Rolling Stone magazine. Now, nine years after their two hit songs were on the lips of every teenager in America, the Spin Doctors are back for another try. However, the only thing they’ve hit with their latest album, “Here Comes the Bride,” is a brick \\all. Released on Das/Universal, this new offering is painfully reminis cent of a handful of recent chart topping bands. Don’t the Spin Doctors have a sound of their own? The song titled “Wow” suggests a watered-down version of Sub lime without the fanfare. The Spin Doctors could be gravitating toward the popular brass ska sound, but one can’t be sure. It seems like they are willing to try anything to lure an audience at this point. “Here Comes the Bride” has tracks that run the full gamut of musical categories from the soft metal sounds of “Waiting for the Blow” and “Dodging Assassins,” to the Christian rock vocals of “Key to the Kingdom.” Versatility is good, but only when a band’s talent can justify the undertaking. The Spin Doctors’ efforts to go out on this limb seems minimal at best. Most of the tracks have promising beginnings but in evitably result in disappointment. In fact, none have catchy enough tunes or outstanding lyrics to be hit singles. The song titled “Diamond” comes the clos est, but, like all the other songs on this album, inconsistency re mains its downfall. An appealing chorus can’t make up for lame verses, and the song is quickly for gotten. The group does get votes for Turn to DOCTORS, page 8 Qfekåld « Classifieds Call (541) 346-4343 or stop by Suite 300 EMC to place your ad today ADVERTISING POLICY PAYMENT Prepayment is required unless billing has been established.
