After her experience at the Pre fontaine, Jacobs has high expec tations. “I don’t know who’s entered yet, but I’m expecting a very fast race,” Jacobs said. “That’s what I am expecting out of my self.” However, Jacobs should have her hands full with a tough field, despite the absence of top chal lenger Suzy Hamilton, who with drew because of injury. The women’s pole vault is more intense than ever with a World Championship berth on the line. This is the first season that women’s pole vault will be showcased at the World Champi onships. And no one could be happier about that than second-seeded Stacey Dragila. She set the US ATF Championships record in 1997 with a score of 14-feet , 1 1/4-inches and topped that mark earlier this year with a jump of 14- 9, which at the time was the American record. She erased her record-setting mark last weekend when she won $100,000 for her jump of 15- feet at the Santa Barbara Beach Vault. Dragila expects a competitive atmosphere this weekend. “I’m ready to jump well, but its not going to be easy because there are three other girls who are jumping pretty well,” Dragila said. Dragila’s coach Dave Nielson said he considers the emergence of women’s pole vault as a major stride for women’s track and field. “It’s been really exciting and long overdue,” Nielson said. “It’s certainly a success for opportuni ties for women and pole vaulting in general. I think it’s great for both.” Dragila’s competition is top notch, with first-seeded Melissa Mueller and Fresno State star Melissa Price vying for a top finish in the event while also looking for redemption. Dragila defeated both Price and Mueller by nearly a foot when they com peted in Indianapolis on June 14. A dark horse in the pole vault may be Oregon’s Karina Elstrom, a junior from Dayton, Oregon. She defeated Dragila at the Ore gon Invitational in 1998. Annette Peters, an Oregon graduate, is the second seed in the 10,000. Peters has participat ed in few meets since she gave birth to her daughter, Emma, on April 22, 1998. But she was the top-ranked 10,000 runner in the United States before her pregnan cy in 1997. So it’s going to be a big draw. “We’re just going to get out there and race for the fans.” The matchup comes thanks to a new policy that grants former world champions automatic berths to Seville. Having won the 100 meters in the 1997 World Championships, Greene does not have to compete at nationals to reach Spain in that event. Johnson, the 400-meter world champion in 1997, also gets a free ticket. That allows the two sprinters to concentrate on the 200, setting the stage for a showdown between world-record holders. “I think at this point you’ve got to think Maurice is the favorite,” Jordan said. “He just set the new 100-meter world record.” Neither Johnson nor Greene are strangers to Hay ward Field competition. In fact, the last time they squared off in the 200 was at the 1998 Prefontaine Classic — a race in which Greene bested Johnson with a wind-aided first-place time of 19.88. Johnson came in third at 20.28. And, only three weeks ago, Greene took first in the 200 at the Pre Classic’s sil ver anniversary. But Greene, the favorite, is not expecting an easy victory — not by any means. “I can’t go into the race thinking he’s not at his top level,” Greene said of Johnson, who has been on the comeback trail since sustaining an injury in 1997. "I have to go into this preparing like he’s the man that ran the 19.32. But many eyes will focus upon 24-year-old Adam Goucher, the relative newcomer from Boulder, Colo. Less than two weeks ago, Goucher nearly beat Kennedy in New York. “I’m just amazed how many people think Adam Goucher is going to take it,” Jordan said. “In my mind, Kennedy is still the king, but a lot of people, whose opinions I really respect, say Goucher is go ing to win.” The pole vault also offers an interesting dual. For mer American record holder Lawrence Johnson will attempt to beat the man who stole his record, favorite Jeff Hartwig. And who could forget about crowd favorites? Lance Deal, the Eugene resident and six-time na tional champion, is favored to win the hammer throw. But fans may want to watch the hometown fa vorite’s performance a bit closer this time, as Deal’s quest for a seventh national championship will be anything but easy. He will be seriously challenged by Kevin McMa hon, who nearly upset Deal at the recent Pre Classic. It wasn’t until Deal’s last throw that he outdistanced McMahon by barely a foot.
