Students, staff and faculty in those build ings said the lights flickered slightly. Everyone’s e-mail went down. One professor and two stu dents had quite a different expe rience. They were trapped in an elevator between the seventh and eighth floors in PLC. Anita Weiss, international studies professor, said the three of them were stuck for about 25 minutes in the dark. “There was a little emergency light, but it took us awhile to get used to the dark to push the emergency button,” she said. “It was scary. We didn’t know what was going on. For a while we just sat there waiting.” Rescue eventually came, just as emergency crews were dis patched to the EMU and Oregon Hall. At the EMU, the bottom floor was closed off. Officials said a Craft Center kiln had been turned on before the power went out, trapping gas that fire officials said presented a possible danger to students. Sgt. For a while we just sat there waiting. ** Anita Weiss International studies professor of Public Safety said sprinkler system tubes leaked in the EMU because electricity was needed to keep water from flowing into the tubes. Ron Neet, the utilities manag er for University Facilities Ser vices, said 90 percent of campus was affected by the power out age. A battery bank, which helps restore power once it is lost, was affected by the substation out age. Once it was reset, the rest of the campus was brought back to life. Buildings like Clinical Ser vices, PLC, Lawrence Hall, MacArthur Court, Onyx Bridge, Pacific Hall and the Computing Center took the longest to restore power to. By 3:16 p.m., campus power was back.
