The one thing Reed did not have before coming to Oregon was a campus tour. But she’d seen Hayward Field during high school state meets. And as far as she was con cerned, that was enough. “I never actually took a trip here, so I didn’t really know what it was like,” Reed said. “I do know that when I was at the state meets, it was pretty cool to be running out on this track.” Reed joined the Ducks’ talented pole-vaulting squad this season as a highly touted freshman recruit. She has handled the pressure like a veteran. Toward the sea son’s end, at the Pepsi-Team Invi tational Reed scored a personal best height of 12-71/2. Teammate Karina Elstrom can relate to the high expectations Reed faced this season. Now a sophomore, Elstrom overcame the pressure in her Oregon debut last season by finishing 16th in the NCAA pole vault and second in the Pacific-10 Conference. Elstrom said one of Reed’s strengths is her ability to deal with winning and losing. “If she does really well, she seems to not get really excited about it, which at first I thought that wasn’t a strength — but if she doesn’t do well, she’s able to blow that off. Either way, I think it’s probably a strength.” Reed’s performances this sea son gave her momentum going into the postseason meets. Al ready, she has finished second in the Pac-lOmeet. If that momentum continues, Reed could be a young surprise for the competition at the NCAA Cham pionships June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. “I’ve never been to an NCAA meet, so I don’t know what to ex pect or how big it will be,” Reed said. “Right now, I just kind of a I've never been to an NCAA meet, so I don’t know what to expect or bow big it will be. Niki Reed UO pole vaulter think of it as another meet. ” Reed is enjoying her success as a college athlete, but she has not let it go to her head. She continues to look toward her teammates and coaches for inspiration. And she has yet to set any long-term goals at Oregon. However, she has developed a philosophy that many others can learn from. “Something that’s important is to always be good-spirited, just to show a happy face even if you don’t jump well in one meet,” Reed said. “Maybe little kids or even people on the team will be able to look up to you.” Blazers Continued from Page 7A game on the hustle of Anthony, the backup to point guard Damon Stoudamire. Anthony first hit a wide-open 3-pointer on a pass from Rasheed Wallace. At the other end, he fought after a loose ball, dribbled down the court and found Wallace for an open jumper to make it 69-61 with 11:10 left. Grant’s aggressiveness also picked up the Blazers. He didn’t get his first point or rebound until late in the first quarter, but was a presence the rest of the game and a defensive hindrance to Malone. This was the first time in 148 career playoff games that Malone did not reach double figures. ‘‘If I wanted to be critical, I could be critical of a lot of things,” Sloan said. “It’s always difficult when you lose, but the most rewarding thing in all of this is that we’ve always fought back. You can talk about cham pionships all you want, but you’ve got to be pretty tough to always fight back.” Each team had a lead of eight points in the second quarter before faltering. A 3-pointer and a running bank shot by Walt Williams gave the Blazers a 26-18 lead. Utah then went on a 17-1 run, and a fastbreak dunk by Russell put the Jazz ahead 35-27. Portland responded with a hook and 3-pointer by Jim Jackson, and the Blazers outscored the Jazz 7-1 to end the quarter. Sabonis had a reverse layup and free throw, and hit a 3-pointer with 8.6 seconds left to tie it 42-all at the half. Notes: Utah has lost its last 11 playoff games in Port land dating to 1988.... Portland’s Stacey Augmon left limping with 3:56 to go in the first quarter with what was called a nerve contusion in his left leg. firm Cool sounds meet smooth espresso at Coffee People.
