Moving Guide
Trucks will get your stuff from point A to B
Truck rental agents say
don’t wait until the last
MINUTE TO HIRE
By Jack Clifford
Oregon Daily Emerald
Students are notorious procrastina
tors. Test tomorrow? We’ll study
later. Ten-page paper due in the
morning? Right after Letterman,
we swear.
If you’re a graduating student leaving
Eugene or just relocating after spring
term, however, don’t let that bad habit
spill over into making plans for your
move. You may find yourself in the
Emerald City a bit longer than you had
hoped, and ruby red slippers are no
longer a ticket home.
I
“We have people come in on the Sat
urday morning of graduation weekend
and say, ‘I need to go to Colorado — to
day,’” said J.R. Fowlkes, an agent for
Ryder Truck Rental. “Then I can’t give
them a truck until maybe the following
Tuesday or so.”
Fowlkes, who has worked with Ry
der for three years, admits that he
can normally help out students as
close as a week before they need a
truck, but he said students “should
really start reserving now at the lat
est.”
He added that a 15-foot truck is
usually sufficient for most movers.
Local rates run $29.99 a day and 49
cents per mile, with a $150 refund
able deposit. Prices for longer hauls
— say, to Colorado — are calculated
based on when and where the person
is going.
U-Haul rates run considerably lower,
according to one of its agents, Jake
Walsh. He quoted a charge of $19.95
per day rental, with 39 cents per mile
tacked on. U-Haul’s deposit is only
$80.
Walsh said U-Haul is also unable
to give a quote for long-distance
rental without knowing the logistics.
U-Haul can offer special packages
based on mileage, though, and the
company usually gives a renter some
leeway with specifics. For instance,
it will pad the necessary mileage to
get from point A to point B, or if a
trip ordinarily should take five days,
he can extend the rental time a day
or two.
