Shaq fuels Lakers’ rousing win
By Beth Harris

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Fueled
by their most ferocious defense of
the season, the Los Angeles Lak
ers took the Houston Rockets out
of their game from the opening
tip.
Shaquille O’Neal also proved
unstoppable, scoring 28 points as
the Lakers never trailed in beating
the Rockets 110-98 Tuesday night
and taking a commanding 2-0
lead in the best-of-5 series. Game
3 is Thursday night in Houston.
Even 3-point shooting, usually
the province of the Rockets, be
longed to the Lakers. Los Angeles
hit 10 of 18 3-pointers and a flurry
of long-range baskets by the Rock
ets got them no closer than nine
points in the second quarter. The
Rockets hit 11 3-pointers, but shot
only 40 percent from the floor for
the game.
The Lakers still couldn’t stop
Charles Barkley, one-third of
Houston’s trio of future Hall of
Famers, who had 19 points and
13 rebounds. The scoring load fell
to Houston’s bench. Sam Mack
led the Rockets with 20 points
and Brent Price added 18.
Scottie Pippen struggled offen
sively for the second straight
game, with three points on 0-of-7
shooting. Hakeem Olajuwon was
saddled with three fouls in the
second quarter, when the Lakers
led by 23 points. He finished with
eight points on 3-of-10 shooting.
The Lakers’ defense ignited
from the start, limiting the Rock
ets to just 12 points in the first pe
riod, fewest by a Los Angeles op
ponent in a quarter this season.
The Rockets began Tuesday's
game just where they left off in
the series opener, committing six
turnovers in the first quarter. Late
turnovers by Pippen and rookie
Cuttino Mobley cost Houston in a
101-100 loss Sunday.
While the Lakers were shutting
down 4he Rockets defensively,
they shot 61 percent in the open
ing quarter and led by 19 points.
Oiajuwon went to the bench
with his third foul early in the
second quarter. He watched the
Rockets briefly get back into the
game on the 3-point shooting of
Price and Mack.
‘Wolves devour Spurs to tie series

SAN ANTONIO — Kevin Garnett and Tim Dun
can saved their big battle for the final quarter, and
Garnett and bis underdog Minnesota Timberwolves
emerged the winners.
Garnett scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth
quarter Tuesday night to lead Minnesota past the
San Antonio Spurs 80-71 and even their Western
Conference playoff series 1-1.
“All I can say is I’m proud of these guys,” said
Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. “Now we have
a series.”
With the victory, the eighth-seeded Timber
wolves grabbed the homecourt advantage from the
No. 1-seeded Spurs in the best-of-5 series. Game 3
is Thursday in Minnesota.
Minnesota led 37-31 at halftime despite shoddy
play by both teams in the first two quarters. The
Timberwolves took a 60-51 margin into the fourth
period.
Duncan opened the final quarter with a basket for
San Antonio and Garnett answered for the Timber
wolves. And so it went as Duncan scored the first
eight points in the period for the Spurs. Garnett
scored the first four for the Timberwolves, and
added six more before the final buzzer.
“We just tried to find ways to match their inten
sity,” Garnett said. “The whole thing was we were
totally aggressive, totally aggressive.”
Garnett said he enjoyed his matchup with Dun
can and that he tried to make his moves when the
Spurs weren’t double-teaming him.

Pacers use overtime
to subdue Bucks
MINNEAPOLIS— Meanwhile
in Minneapolis, Dale Davis’ tip of
a Mark Jackson miss with .5 sec
onds to go gave Indiana a 108-107
overtime victory over Milwaukee
Tuesday night and a 2-0 lead in
their best-of-5 series.
Magic mystifies
76ers, evens series
ORLANDO, Fla. — So much for
Penny Hardaway’s insistence that
he couldn’t slow down Allen
Iverson and flourish offensively at
the same time.
Responding to the NBA scoring
champion’s challenge to “bring it
on,” the Orlando Magic stormed
back into their first-round playoff
series with the Philadelphia 76ers
with a 79-68 victory Tuesday night.
The Magic held Iverson to 13
points, while Hardaway overcame
a point-less first quarter to score 22
as Orlando evened the best-of-5
matchup at one game apiece.
