Oregon head coach Renee Baumgartner is impressed with the skill of the participants at re gionals this season. “In my 12 years of coaching, this is the most talented field I have ever seen,” said Baumgart ner, who led Oregon to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Cham pionships two seasons ago. “We’re definitely in the thick of things, though.” Oregon led the field after 12 holes, keeping its score under par. Oregon’s red-hot putting has kept it in the mix during the first day of competition. “This was the lowest putting average we’ve had this sea son,” said Baumgartner, who saw her team putt 28 times Thursday. “Angie [Rizzo] and Pam [Sowden] had hot put ters all day.” Sowden and Rizzo’s success on the greens translated into the Ducks’ lowest scores. Sowden was Oregon’s top performer with a 73, and Rizzo is right behind her at 75. Jerilyn White shot a 76, and Dawn Berry ended up with a 78. Surprisingly, Oregon’s top scor er on the season, Karen Bristow, finished with the worst Oregon score at 79. The senior, who aver ages 76.5 strokes, missed the Pa cific-10 Conference Tournament to return to Australia for personal reasons. Baumgartner dismisses the notion that her absence in that tournament reflected on her high score Thursday. “She hit great shots; they would just roll over the green, and her putter wasn’t her friend,” Baumgartner said. “But she al ways comes through when we need her, and she handles pres sure very well.” Consistency may be Oregon’s key in improving its ranking in the tournament. Rizzo had two triple bogies, but finished only three over par because of multiple birdies. “We need to eliminate big numbers,” Baumgartner said. “If we do that, we’ll be fine.” No. 18 UO drives for momentum The Ducks’ final test before regionals starts today at Stanford By Brett Williams for the Emerald Coming off a third-place finish at the Pacific-10 Tournament last week, the Oregon men’s golf team begins its last test before the NCAA West Regionals today at Stanford Golf Course in the U.S. Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament will help No. 18 Oregon decipher where it stands nationally, partic ipating against three ranked Pac 10 opponents. No. 7 Arizona State, No. 12 Washington and No. 24 California are featured. Other Pac-10 opponents in the top 40 are UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State and Southern California. Oregon’s indi vidual perfor mances at the Pac-lOs and throughout the season merited conference hon ors that were accepted this week. Adrian Burtner, despite a 39th place finish at the Pac-lO’s, cap tured second-team all-league hon ors. Ryan Lavoie and Andrew Tred way, who both tied for ninth in the tournament, received honor able-mention honors. Ben Crane, who leads Oregon with a 73.21 average, was voted honorable mention as well. Crane’s play at the U.S. Intercol legiate last season led the Ducks to a fifth-place finish. Crane man aged to shoot a 68 in the final round to place third individually. No Oregon player has ever won the individual championship. Oregon’s last and only team title was in 1993. Stanford’s Joel Kribel has en joyed tremendous success at this tournament in years past. As a freshman, Kribel earned first place individually.
