The growing process
This season has been shaped
by the likes of Davis, Knudson
and Elstrom. However, the Ducks
have a wealth of talent who are
gaining valuable experience.
Perhaps the most potent of
Oregon’s young weapons is pole
vaulter Niki Reed. Reed, who
was an Oregon state champion in
her prep years, set a new person
al best at Mt. SAC with a vault of
12-3 3/4.
Two freshmen sprinters were
also recruited to help anchor the
Ducks. But Alexis Yeater has yet
to find her stride in the 100 and
200, and Endia Abrante has been
out most of the season with a
pulled hamstring.
Abrante returned to competi
tion last weekend but aggravated
the injury in the 400. She may be
faced with more time away from
competition.

Just how serious is Bellotti
about making room for track?
“We had [last] Friday, Saturday
and Sunday off from football be
cause there was a big track meet,”
Bellotti said. “Our only rule for
the players is that during their
first year they go through spring
football first.”
The final day of spring football
is May 1, when Oregon plays its
last scrimmage, and then Bello
and Hanspard have some big
meets to look forward to. Oregon
hosts the annual Prefontaine
Classic on Memorial Day week
end, and Hayward Field will also
be the site of the 1999 U.S. Track
and Field Championships.
Oregon men take a rest
Hanspard and Bello get a break
from track this weekend as the
men’s track team will not travel to
Des Moines, Iowa, with the women
to compete in the Drake Relays.
But the two will be hard at work
when the Oregon football team fin
ishes this week’s workouts with a
scrimmage on Saturday.
