play and promptly leveled Har

Bellotti said Feeley’s game ex
perience, although limited, does
give him a minor edge on Harring
ton.
No matter who is taking the
snaps for Oregon come the Sept. 4
season opener at Michigan State,
he will have some dangerous
weapons at his disposal.
Wide receiver Tony Hartley will
be back with the Ducks for his se
nior season next fall after flirting
with leaving for the NFL early fol
lowing his suspension for Ore
gon’s Aloha Bowl loss to Colorado
on Christmas Day.
In 11 games last season, Hartley
hauled in 48 passes for 1,015 yards
and a team-high 10 touchdowns.
Along with Hartley, Bellotti ex
pects tailback Reuben Droughns to
be a key facet of the Duck offense.
Droughns gained an astonishing
824 yards in just five games last
season before breaking his right
ankle at UCLA and sitting out the
rest of the season.
The Ducks hope Tony Hartley, who caught 48 passes last season,
S'ick Medley/Emerald
can stay just out ol the reach ot defenders again next fall.
D-Backs chase Brown, but Mondesi bites back
By John Nadel
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Baseball’s
first $100 million man wasn’t
worth it in his Los Angeles
Dodgers’ debut.
Raul Mondesi was right on the
money and bailed out Kevin Brown,
who flopped in his marquee
matchup with Randy lohnson.
Mondesi tied the game with a
three-run homer with two outs in
the ninth, then hit a two-run
homer in the 11th to give him six
RBIs as the Dodgers beat the Ari
zona Diamondbacks 8-6 in Mon
day’s season opener.
Brown allowed five runs and 10
hits in 5 2-3 innings, giving up a
pair of solo homers to Bernard
Gilkey and a three-run shot to Jay
Bell that put Arizona ahead 5-2 in
the sixth.
He appeared headed to a loss
until Mondesi homered off Gregg
Olson on a 3-0 pitch in the ninth
following leadoff singles by Jose
Vizcaino and Dave Hansen against
Armando Reynoso.
Mondesi homered again two in
nings later off John Frascatore after
a two-out walk to Gary Sheffield.
While Brown flopped in his
Dodgers debut; Davey Johnson
came out a winner in his first game
as the Los Angeles manager.
Jolmson, making his Diamond
backs’ debut and his seventh
opening-day start, left for a pinch
hitter in the eighth after allowing
just five hits and two runs in seven
innings. He walked six and struck
out nine.
Mondesi hit a two-out RBI sin
gle off Johnson in the first, and for
mer Diamondback Devon White
homered off Johnson in the fourth.
Brown, who threw 111 pitches,
struck out seven and walked two.
He was booed by many in the sell
out crowd of53,109 at Dodger Sta
dium as he left the field.
While you may join the idle
rich after graduation, it’s nice to
get a taste of it now.
