Election News Bettin plans to dissolve executive ay jason ueorge Oregon Daily Emerald Editor’s note: This is the first of an 11 -part series profiling the ASUO Executive candidates for next year. The primary elections are April 14 and 15, followed by the general elections on April 21 and 22. Transcripts of interviews with each candidate will appear on page three Monday through Friday this week. Transcripts are edited for space, clarity, grammar and libel. Brett Bettin is a reglious stud ies major and is running for ASUO president without a run ning mate. ||»What’s your platform? A»My platform is for a disillu sion of the ASUO Exec. The truth is that I am just a figure head because I have a body. You see, the Lord did not think he should come back another time. He said, “Brett, you run for presi dent. Put me on your ticket. I will take care of it when you win.” Q«What do you consider the ■two most pressing issues at the University? A«Probably student fees and Sa ■tan. It comes down to student fees and Satan. Satan is a big pro mulgator of the student fees, as far as God has told me. QaHow do you plan to deal ■with those issues? A»Like I said, I am really just ■here as a figure head. I am basically turning the whole thing over to God once it all goes down. 0«What are the weaknesses of »the University? A«Again, I think we have cov «ered this already. I think the strong, the strongest weakness we have is that the exec exists, and that has been nothing but problems since my term at the U of O. I think by disbanding the exec, office, the University will be a better place for people from every walk of life, not just Chris tians or Buddhists, but across the spectrum. If you will take the analogy of Noah and his flood, I think it would be good to flood the campus and wash away all of the bad stuff, just like God did so many centuries ago. Start fresh. Q«What are the strengths of the •University? A*Well, I think the strength of •this University is the student body. Because there are a lot of good people here, I don’t think they need to put up with the evil undercurrents that have been dominating the governmental branch of this university. It is time that we put it to an end. We get rid of it all and let the stu dents have their campus back from this small percentage of people who dominate .... Q>What experience do you •have that makes you a good candidate for ASUO president? A .That’s the beauty of it, I have •no experience. That is OK, though. Because if I get elected, and I win, there will be no ASUO president. It is really a moot point. f|*In choosing “Lord” as your l$»running mate, what do you think the "Lord's” goals are for ASUO vice-president? «*It has long been debated if • students can understand the will of God, and I am under the opinion that we can. It is defi nitely ineffable. I am not going to sit here and tell you that I defi nitely know what God's plans are. I have had a few discussions with him and most of the time I am completely lost. There are hymns and singing and bright lights, and I basically just stand there dumbfounded. But I do know that whatever his plans are, they will be a benefit to the University as a whole. Really, God can’t go wrong, so I have complete faith. 0«What would be your goals as •ASUO president? A* In the eternal war of good and •evil, I am here to get rid of the executive branch of this office because of their misuse of stu dent fees. Q»What sets you apart from the •other 10 presidential candi dates? A«I think it is that 1 am running •with God. Really 1 do not have anything that is great about me. I am just a guy who is run ning with God, and that is what is carrying me through this. You just have to have faith that God’s will be done, and that is all I have. Work study focus of Beutler’s campaign by Jason ueorge Oregon Daily Emeraltl William Beutler is an unde clared sophomore and an asso ciate editor at The Commenta tor. Q«What’s your platform? A .My platform is that I want •the money for work study. Basically, I don’t want to do anything, and 1 figure that if I put in my 30 hours a week, which is about 3.3 dollars per hour, I will be set for the term. Q»What do you consider the •two most pressing issues at the University? «»One is that I have to walk to •class, and the other is that it got cloudy after it was sunny today. Q>How do you plan to deal •with those issues? A«I think weather control is ■definitely on the order. As far as walking to class, I think it is possible that 1 could get a lit tle bike system running around here. But I will do what 1 can. I will talk to my cronies. Q«What are the weaknesses •of the University? A»I think the weakness of the • University is that I am not in charge of it. I think there are a lot of things that need to go on around here that are not go ing on around here. And I think once I am in office I will be able to get the University on task and on the road for the next millennium — that is what it’s all about. It’s impor tant because it is about to be a new millennium. Q«What are the strengths of • the University? A«The strengths of the Uni •versity are that 1 can go to school for a couple of years and not have to worry about the outside world. As long as 1 keep going further into debt, going to classes, 1 can pretty much forget about the future. Q»What experience do you •have that makes you a good candidate for ASUO president? A«I like Robo Rally. It is defi •nitely important to have somebody in office that knows their Robo Rally from top to bottom. Q»Why did you not choose a •running mate? A«Are we supposed to have •running mates? Q«What would be your goals • as ASUO president? A-What would I do with •goals? Q«What sets you apart from •the other 10 presidential candidates? A: There is other people running for the office?
