University archaeologist brings Indiana Jones to life A special presentation hopes to link the movie with a real-life scientist By G. Jaros Oregon Daily Emerald Treasure maps and whips are the tools of some movie archaeologists, and real life archaeologist Dennis Jenkins will be surrounded by both during a special show for the young and young-at-heart this weekend. University archaeologist Dennis Jenkins will be givinga presentation before a special 11 a.m. showing of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" at Regal Springfield Cinemas on Saturday morning. The special event will in clude demonstrations and prizes. Springfield Cinemas’ manager Jay Fullmer asked Jenkins to give the presentation so that children can learn what real-life archaeolo gists do. Jenkins will show slides of Uni versity students doing field studies as well as talk about the University’s archaeological field school. “What I want to get across to the kids is that archaeology is fun, but it requires discipline,” Jenkins said. “In other words, it has to be done in the right way so as not to destroy the archaeological sites that we study.” Jenkins is co-director of the ar chaeology and geoarchaeology field school in the anthropology and geography departments. He is also on the faculty of the Universi ty Museum of Natural History. Jenkins hopes to get across to the kids how archaeologists visualize what was here before, how people acted and what they did, he said. Springfield Cinemas occasion ally plans big celebrations around certain movies, Fullmer said. “Raiders” is the movie they’ve re ally been wanting to show. “The bulk of employees at the theater are totally in love with the movie,” Fullmer said. "It took us a while to get this movie because there are only two prinks available.” The lobby of the movie theater will be decorated with Indiana Jones material, including a model of the Ark of the Covenant, the prize searched for by Indiana and the Nazis in the movie. Jenkins' presentation will be followed by a stunt group from Springfield High School called “Nice Girls With Whips.” They will perform various stunts in cluding extinguishing candles us ing their 8- to 12-foot whips. Following the stunt show will be a prize drawing for kids who correctly answered questions from a special treasure hunter’s map that can be picked up this week at the movie theater or the Museum of Natural History. Many try for ASUO presidency A sidewalk campaign brought out the large number of candidates By Sarah Skidmore Oregon Daily Emerald A surprisingly large number of ASUO presidential candidates have turned out for this year’s spring elec tion. On March 12, the official dead line to file for candidacy, there were 23 applicants for president. After the mandatory candidate meeting Tuesday, there are 11 candidates. Only two of the presidential can didates are choosing to have a run ning mate. Dan Reid is running with Matt Swanson, and Wylie Chen is running with Mitra Anoushiravani. The other candidates are: Bran don Hartly, William Beutler, Melis sa Logan, Ed Madrid, Tamir Kriegel, Brandon Smith, Nick Bostic, Michael Atkinson and Brett Betin. If a candidate without a vice president wins, he or she is free to appoint one following the election. Kriegel and friend Jonathan Col legio recruited the majority of the candidates to run, said Taylor Sturges, ASUO elections coordina tor. The pair positioned themselves in front of the University Bookstore and collected signatures from po tential presidential contenders. “If they are just sort of goofing off about it, it is a waste of a lot of people’s time who are involved in the election,” Sturges said of the recruited candidates. "Also, it kind of takes away from the peo ple who are serious. But if they are serious, more power to them. ’’ Neither Kriegel nor Collegio could be reached for reaction. The spring elections will be held April 14-15 and 21-22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taylor said she hopes to have a larger voter turnout than last year’s 20 percent of students voting. “It is really important for stu dents to vote,” Sturges said. “Many students don’t realize how much power they have. It is im portant for students to get some one in there they trust.” Today’s Events Friday, April 2 Orientation for Duck Days will be held by the Office of Admissions from 1 to 5 p.m. in various EMU locations. Contact the Office of Admissions for more information. The Cultural Forum will be holding its Spring Film Series from 8 to 12 p m in 180 PLC. You Know You Want One!
