Motley Criie brings‘Wild Side' to Hult

ome rock ‘n' roll acts —
once they reach a certain
level of stardom or begin to
creep toward middle-age — try
to re-ignite their high
school/garage band days. Then
there are groups like Motley
Criie, which seems to have nev
er really matured past 12th
grade and has a freaking blast
proving that fact.
The glam-or-be-damned boys
from L.A. — bassist Nikki Sixx,
guitarist Mick Mars, singer
Vince Neil and drummer Tom
my Lee — are set to rip it up at
the Hult Center, and no rock
cliche is safe. So if sporting high
hair, donning leather pants and
black make-up and flashing the
devil-horns sign was your M.O.
in the mid-’80s, then circle
March 24 in cherry-bomb lip
stick.
To hit the concert circuit these
days, it seems as though the only
requirement is that each band
member has a pulse. (Keith
Richards’ is probably checked
between each Rolling Stones
song.) For the Criie, that’s a big
accomplishment, considering
the quartet has sometimes
pushed a death-defying enve
lope.
Sixx nearly died from heroin
overdose several years ago, and

Silicone and home video jokes
aside, if there is a more embar
rassing union than the one be
tween these head-space-for-rent
twins, the world has been
spared.
Yet, despite this behavior, Mot
ley Criie has a loyal, fairly strong
following. The band has played
to mostly sold-out venues on this
tour to promote their greatest hits
album, which boasts 17 tracks,
including “Girls, Girls, Girls,”
“Wild Side,” “Kickstart My
Heart,” “Home Sweet Home”
and, of course, the Brownsville
Station cover “Smokin’ in the
Boys’ Room.”
Two new tracks, “Enslaved”
and “Bitter Pill,” bring the band
up to speed for the late 1990s.
A spokesperson for the Hult
Center said approximately 500
tickets are left in the 2,500-seat
Silva Hall for the upcoming Eu
gene show. If glam rock is your
swig of Mountain Dew, phone
the ticket office at 682-5000 and
then soak up the show, which
the boys provide with teenage
delight, smoke machines and
all.
On the liner notes for “Great
est Hits,” each rocker puts into
words his emotions about being
a Criie member. Mars, the gui
tarist, writes (his punctuation
and capitalization included):
“NIKKI SIXX, VINCE NEIL,
TOMMY LEE, MICK MARS:
MOTLEY CRUE!! Together in
life, together in death, together
forever!!!! Long live MOTLEY
CRUE!!!!!”
Ah, to be in high school
again.
