Smith
Continued from Page 7 A
Darius Wright and Smith hit
consecutive threes during a two
minute stretch to push Oregon to
a 55-50 edge with 8:25 remaining.
At 4:40, Smith banked home
another layin to give the Ducks a
61-55 advantage.
But the Yellow Jackets — as
suredly hardened by playing on
the road at places such as Duke’s
Cameron Indoor Stadium in their
native Atlantic Coast Conference
— battled back again to claim a
64-63 lead on Alvin Jones’ tipin
with 1:38 left.
On Oregon’s next possession,
Smith received the ball on the
perimeter, nodded his signature
head fake and drove to the basket
to draw Collier’s fifth, disqualify
ing foul with 1:20 remaining.
Collier had managed just two
points and three rebounds in the
second half.
The free throws that awaited
were perhaps the most pressure
packed of Smith’s career.
“Those are the kinds of shots
you think a long time about,” said
Smith, who shot 74 percent from
the line during the regular season.
Smith stepped to the line, went
through his normal free-throw
routing and swished the first to tie
the game at 64.
Then, Smith did precisely the
same thing on the second free
throw to boost the Ducks to a 65
64 lead they would never relin
quish in cementing a ticket to the
NIT's second round with a 67-64
victory.
Smith finished with a team
high 17 points on six-of-14 shoot
ing, eight rebounds and two as
sists despite his slow start.
“I haven't felt this good since
high school postseason wins,”

said Smith, a graduate of Eugene’s

The 6,666 Oregon fans in atten
dance, the Ducks and — especial
ly — A.D. Smith could not have
asked for a better finish.
