Sophomore David Becker lost his match against Santa Barbara on Sunday. The men's
tennis team is set to play Pacific this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Men’s tennis holds off Santa Barbara
By Brett Williams
fortheCmerald
Oregon thrived off early points
in doubles play and held off Santa
Barbara in men’s tennis Sunday at
the Eugene Swim and Tennis
Club.
The Ducks (4-7) hardly resem
bled the team that was disman
tled by Washington just more
than a week ago. Miguel Arriaga
and Carlos Navarro earned Ore
gon's first points, defeating Sandy
Gentile and Mike Ortiz, 8-3. After
a Santa Barbara victory over
David Becker and Thomas
Schneiter, the Ducks rallied from
a 7-5 deficit and won 9-8, cour
tesy of Guillermo Carter and
Bertrand Devillers.
However, Oregon’s top singles
players were unable to score any
points against Corey Guy and Si
mon Shen, two players whom
Oregon coach Chris Russell be
lieves can “beat any top two play
ers in the nation.”
Carter seemed in control in the
first set against Shen, leading 4-1
early. But Shen came back to tie
the set at 5-5 and won it 7-6. Simi
lar problems occurred for Carter
in the next set, as he watched an
other 4-1 lead evaporate and lost
the set.
Guy had his way with Schneit
er in their singles match, winning
6-2, 6-1 in a match that Russell
felt was uncharacteristic of
Schneiter’s play.
“He didn’t do well, but he has
been our most consistent per
former all year,” Russell said.
Encouraging for Oregon was
the dominating play of Dev
illers, Russell said. The fresh
man from Belgium had no prob
lem disposing of Mike Ortiz,
6-0, 6-1.
Overall, Russell said he was im
pressed with his team’s perfor
mance.
“Our guys have made an effort
to get better after losses, and this
match rewarded them for their
hard work,” he said.
Oregon will prepare this week
for its home match against Pacific
on Saturday. Russell said the
Tigers bring a lot of talent to the
match.
“When they are healthy, they
are as good if not better than Santa
Barbara. We can’t think things
will come to us; we have to go out
and take it to them,” Russell said.
