Jan. 8, and on the following night
Oregon suffered its worst loss of
the season to Cal State Bakers
field, 39-3.
Oregon was able to bounce
back from its loss to the Roadrun
ners. The Ducks took Oregon
State down to the wire in Corval
lis on Jan. 16, but the Beavers
won the first Civil War match 20
19. Oregon may have lost the
meet, but the team’s confidence
was up.
Then, the hard times struck
again.
Cox was forfeited against
both Nebraska and Portland
State in a tournament in Port
land on Jan. 22. The result was
12 automatic points for each
team. Oregon was still able to
beat Portland State, but could
not get past Nebraska.

the Ducks’ season. Between the
forfeits and tough scheduling
against top 10 powers Oklahoma
and Oklahoma State, Oregon lost
its remaining six meets.
Although the Ducks as a team
struggled through most of the
year, the individuals, for the
most part, did not. Kearney said
149-pound Mark Castle, 141
pound David Watson, 174
pound Shawn O’Rourke and
heavyweight Kevin Keeney all
improved throughout the sea
son.
And according to Kearney, the
contributions by the upper
weights were invaluable.
“They were seasoned veter
ans,” he said. “They stepped
up and competed all season
long. They worked hard to be
the best that they could be, and
we liked having the big guys
around.”
Kearney also said this season
can’t be sized up solely by the
Ducks’ 4-10 overall record.
“It must be judged by the im
provements of our athletes
throughout the season,” he said.
“This year, being a new coaching
staff, was a transition year. We
felt our growing pains, but the
core group progressed, worked
hard and competed.”
