Oregon women move one step closer to first title
Angelina wolvert s double

women’s basketball team

CORVALLIS — Angelina Wolvert capped
a spectacular game Friday night with a sim
ple spin move to the hoop that ended Ore
gon State’s upset bid and may someday be
known as the pirouette that gave the Oregon
women’s basketball team the Pacific-10
Conference title.
Leading by just six points with less than
a minute to play, Oregon senior Lisa
Bowyer inbounded the ball from the base
line to Wolvert a few feet away.
With her back to the basket, and as the
shot clock clicked toward zero, Wolvert
shook one Oregon State defender with a
move to her left, then another as she
moved back to her right and scooped the
ball with her left hand toward the bas
ket.
As the Oregon fans — who made up
more than 80 percent of the 5,034 in atten
dance — leapt to their feet, the ball fell
through the hoop to give the Ducks an in
surmountable 60-52 lead with just 34 sec
onds to play.
What Duck fans didn’t know then was
that Wolvert’s layin, which sunk the
Beavers and gave the No. 18 Oregon a
bruising 60-52 victory at Gill Coliseum,
was made even more significant Satur
day when Washington beat UCLA to give
the Ducks a full one-game lead in the
Pac-10 title hunt with just two games to
play.
Seeking its first conference title in
school history, Oregon (23-4 overall, 14-2
in the Pac-10) still needs to sweep its final
two games, Thursday at Stanford and Sat
urday at California, to capture the cham
pionship outright and to host the first
round of the NCAA Tournament on
March 12. But a split in the remaining two
games guarantees the Ducks at least a
share of the title.

It was truly the best and worst of
times for the Oregon men’s basketball
team on Saturday.
On one hand, the Ducks evened the
score in the Civil War, avenging their

and giving the Beavers a perfect 0-9

--- On the other hand,
it was one more in a seemingly endless
stretch of nail-biters, the Ducks’ 12 of 16
conference games decided by five or
less points or in overtime.
Oregon (15-10 overall, 7-9 Pac-10)
has now won three straight such games,
and five of six overall, including a 73-68
win over the Beavers in front of 9,087 at
McArthur Court on Saturday.
“We’ve been through so many of
these close games, that I think we’re re
ally poised coming down the stretch, so
I wasn’t really worried,” Oregon center
Mike Carson said.
Carson’s confidence came despite a
harrowing eight-minute span of the sec
ond half in which the Beavers came
from down nine, 46-37, to put the
fourth sellout crowd of the season on
the edges of their seats once again.
Josh Steinthal kept Oregon State (12

pointers, none bigger than the one that

Scales lifts
UO to win
By Tim Pyle
Oregon Daily Emerald
When the Oregon men's basketball
team needed it most Saturday night at
McArthur Court, Alex Scales piggy
backed the Ducks to victory.
After Oregon State used a 17-3 run to
grab its first lead at 48-46 with 10 min
utes, 28 seconds to play in the second
half, the Ducks looked like they were in
trouble — both in theCivil War and with
their postseason dreams.
The easy baskets via the fast break and
free-flowingoffensehad suddenly disap
peared as Oregon repeatedly launched
deep jumpers that found anything but the
bottom of the net.
A.D. Smith managed to pull the Ducks
even with two free throws, but then Sasa
Petrovic nailed a three-pointer to put the
Beavers up 51-48 with 9:36 to play.
At that point, Scales, who leads Ore
gon in scoring with more than 14 points
pergame, had just five points.
But there was a suitable explanation
for his struggles.
For the first time since he arrived in Eu
gene, Scales, a native of Racine, Wis.,
who joined the Ducks as a junior-college
transfer this season, was playing in front
ofhis parents.
“The big thing we talked about when
he was not playing, as well the first half,
is his folks are here,” head coach Ernie
Kent said. “We talked about it all last
night and today — settle down. As you
know, he’s a guy with a lot of energy al
