Students speak out about impeachment trial As the trial begins in the Senate, many students feel Clinton will not he impeached By Sarah Skidmore Oregon Daily Emerald Shortly before the U.S. Senate impeach ment trial begins, University students are expressing a wide variety of opinions on the proceedings. The majority of the students questioned felt President Clinton will not be im peached. “If I had to guess, I’d say they’d censure him before anything else,” said Chris Long, a junior political science major. “I don’t think an impeachment will go through,” said Trina Gomez, a sophomore psychology student. “I just can’t see it. It seems like a really extreme measure.” The opening statements in the impeach ment trial will begin Thursday. Clinton faces charges of perjury and obstruction of iustice. Following the conclusion of the tri al, the Senate must have a majority vote to decide whether to impose censure or im peachment. While many students believe he will not be impeached, students have a variety of desires for Clinton’s destiny. “The good guys can't pull 67 votes to put him out of office,” said Steve Jurries, junior in business and vice chairman of the Col lege Republicans, who would like to see Clinton leave office. “I don’t think he should be impeached,” said Brian Baker, a junior journalism major. "His personal life shouldn’t affect how peo ple consider him as a political leader.” Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. public do not want to see Clinton removed from of fice, according to a CNN/USA Today Gallup Poll released Monday. At the University level, the trial process appears to be of as much interest to stu dents as the outcome. “I think it is going to be as long as the O.J. Simpson trial,” said Steve Moroney, a se nior exercise and movement science major. “I mean, look at O.J., and now we’re talk ing about the President of the United States. It will be drawn out.” Long said, “I am interested in what is go ing to happen in the Senate. It is going to be very different than the House.” One issue of concern to many students is the activity of the Republicans in the Sen ate. "I think the Republicans were out to get him,” Long said. "I would like to see the Republicans made fools of for bringing this to the attention of the American public," said Andy Sullivan, a senior studying computer science. While the majority of Americans believe that Clinton will get a fair trial, 63 percent believe the Republicans and Democrats will mostly fight with each other during the trial, according to the CNN poll. Regardless of differing opinions, most students seem to agree that the trial is a highly contentious public event. “It is pretty much like a soap opera now,” Gomez said.
