Since 1876, the forensics team
has been an active part of the
University, making it one of the
oldest groups on campus. It is
the only group that teaches stu
dents public speaking and allows
them to compete in debates
against opponents from other
schools.
“Competing against someone
who is on a different level from
you teaches you a lot about pub
lic speaking and about how to
present your argument,” said
Suarez. “About half of our team
members have done this before
either in college or high school,
and that helps a lot.”
Professor David Frank, director
of debate and public recourse,
helps students prepare and form
a strategy for competition.
“Arguments are usually pre
sented by someone who agrees
with that point of view,” said
Frank. “It is easier for someone to
argue something that is interest
ing to them.”
Another event, interpretation
of literature, judges the team
member’s ability to read and
form an argument about a writing
sample.
“Forensics is a place for under
graduates to come and learn the
art of speaking and argument that
puts them on the spot,” said Di
rector of Intercollegiate Forensics
Rick Peacor. “It is one of the only
places on campus that provides
this type of forum.”
Several events test a team’s
ability to prepare to argue for a
v. difficult topic in a limited
amount of time — usually only
about 30 minutes. Team mem
bers participate in events that
range from parliamentary debate
to interpretation of literature and
advocating different public poli
cies.
Competitors use a variety of
debating styles, including per
suasive speech, which lets the
speaker try to espouse his or her
point of view, and informative
speech, which allows the speak
er to form an argument using fac
tual data.
Policy debate requires the
competitor to advocate different
public policies, while a competi
tor argues to the contrary.
“This topic requires a lot of sta
mina, because they have to re
search both sides of the argument
and debate at least six times in a
single competition,” Peacor said.
Headquarters for the forensics
team is located in the UO Annex
at Kincaid Street and 12th Av
enue .
“Parliamentary debate is one of
the most challenging formats,”
said Peacor. “The team member
only gets a few minutes to form
an educated argument on a topic
that is in the news. You have no
way of knowing what the topic
will be ahead of time, so you
have to come prepared for any
thing.”
“Topics for debate can range
from campaign spending to re
moving U.S. troops from Bosnia,”
Peacor said.
Team member Tom Suarez, a
pre-journalism major, partici
pates in several different events,
including debate. He emphasizes
the importance of experience in
debate.
Team members meet and learn
how to prepare for a wide range
of topics. The forensics team usu
ally competes four or five times a
month, and the team brings files
that have information on every
thing from current news events to
issues of social and scientific de
bate.
