Biologist wins 1998
Discovery Award
University biologist Charles
Kimmel won the 1998 Discovery
Award for his work with ze
brafish.
The award, given annually by
the Oregon Health Sciences Foun
dation, recognizes Oregon scien
tists who have made significant
original contributions to biochem
ical research.
Kimmel, a member of the Uni
versity Institute of Neuroscience,
is a leading developmental biolo
gist who uses zebrafish to learn
how early embryonic cells help
form body tissues and organs.
This work helps explain early de
velopment in vertebrate species,
including humans.
Consolidated student
loan deadline Jan. 31
Time is running out to consoli
date school loans to receive the
special interest rate offered by
Congress.
Applications must be received
by January 31 for borrowers to re
ceive a 7.46 percent interest rate.
After the deadline, the rate will in
crease to 8.25 percent. By consoli
dating loans, borrowers eliminate
the hassle of multiple payments.
Out-of-school borrowers with
federal loans, parents with PLUS
loans and a select set of in-school
borrowers — those who only hold
direct loans — are eligible to use
the special interest rate. All other
in-school borrowers must wait un
til February 1 to consolidate.
The 7.46 percent interest rate is
available through the U.S. Depart
ment of Education’s Direct Loan
Program and is also being offered by
some private lenders. To consoli
date, borrowers ran call the Depart
ment of Education’s consolidation
hotline at 1-800-557-7392, can
complete a direct loan application
on-line at www.ed.gov/Direot

for the volunteers, who will be
asked to work as advocates, crisis
line counselors and children’s
workers, begins Jan. 9.

for Eugene hospice
Hospice of Sacred Heart is also
seeking volunteers to become part
of a multidisciplinary team sup
porting terminally ill patients and
their caregivers. Volunteers will
give practical assistance and emo
tional support to families in the
home setting and in care facilities.
An informational meeting will
be held Jan. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at
the Sacred Heart Home Health of
fice, 1121 Fairfield Ave., Eugene.
