After tough loss, Ducks salvage third
uy Ainson boss
Oregon Daily Emerald
For the second time this season,
the Oregon women's basketball
team found themselves out of
championship contention in tour
nament play.
The Ducks finished in third
place in the Jayhawk Commerce
Bank Classic by easily defeating
Maryland Eastern Shore 76-38 in
the consolation game Saturday in
Lawrence, Kan.
Maryland Eastern Shore, which
traveled to the tournament with
just eight players, was not able to
keep up with Oregon, which had
all 13 of its players play.
The Ducks were led by sopho
more Lindsey Dion, who recorded
her first double-double at Oregon,
finishing with career highs of 10
rebounds and 10 points in 29 min
utes.
Sophomore Brianne Meharry
led all scorers with 16 points along
with seven rebounds.
After a disappointing 62-53 loss
to Butler on Friday, Oregon (6-2)
retaliated by taking a 29-8 lead af
ter 16 minutes against Maryland
Eastern Shore. The Lady Hawks
managed just 16 points in the first
half, tying an Oregon season low of
points allowed in a half.
vve aia a
good job defen
sively tonight,”
Oregon head
coach Jody
Runge said. “We
forced a lot of
turnovers and
Dlaved a lot
more aggressive. We were much
quickerthan we were [Friday] and
did a good job keeping them off the
boards.”
The Ducks didn’t slow down in
the second half as they went on a
14-0 run to widen the gap at 55-22.
The Lady Hawks had few chances
to pull the reigns in, as they com
mitted 20 turnovers in the game,
14 of which were Oregon steals.
Oregon allowed Maryland East
ern Shore just six free-throw at
tempts and held the Lady Hawks
to 28 percent shooting from the
field. The Ducks were 12 for 17
from the foul line but shot 15 for 36
from the field.
Oregon dominated the boards,
nabbing a season-high 52 re
bounds, while allowing the Lady
Hawks 37.
"We needed to pound someone
to get stuff out of our system,” Dion
said. “We weren’t ready to play
[Butler] from the moment we got
here, and we needed to turn things
around. Today we had the right
mind set and attitude to play.”
“Of course we would rather
have played in the championship
game,” Runge said. “It would have
been nice to have that competition,
but it was nice to see the girls come
back after a disappointing perfor
mance.”
Sophomore Jenny Mowe was an
all-tournament team selection with
22 points and seven rebounds.
Oregon hopes to continue its
winning ways when it heads to
Boise State on Dec. 15 for a 7 p.m.
matchup.
