V. 906 W 7th, Eugene • 344-9523 • Closed Mondays Outkast headlined Portland concert The hip-hop duo performed Nov. 28 at Portland's Roseland Theater By Katie Meehan lor the Emerald Winter steelhead runs aren’t the only thing to quake Portland this season. A unique cohort of “bass,” courtesy of the hip-hop community, bypassed fish ladders and reverberated through the Roseland Theater on Nov. 28. This breed of bass, however, is no ordinary fish species. Prophetic lyrics, wicked tunes and bass-heavy beats were in full effect at the Outkast concert at the Roseland Theater. Featuring Melky Sedik, Black Eyed Peas, Hungry Mob, DJ B-Mello and Audio Or phanz as opening acts, the hip-hop extravaganza pro vided hydrating performances and strong support to the Northwest hip-hop scene. In a region waterlogged by country music and post-MTV grunge, the concert was an influx of raw energy and refined talent. As concert MC and home town prodigy Cool Nutz put it, “Where’s [Portland] at?! We got a hip-hop scene!” The audience, a hybrid of hard-core hip-hoppers and suburban high school students, enthusiastically agreed. Melky Sedik, a sister and brother duo, acti vated the crowd with a short, head-bobbing set. As siblings to the Fugees’ Wyclef Jean, the musical tal ent was more than a genetic anomaly: it was a bless ing.
