by the University acted well in
helping to prevent a riot this year.
There will have to be an ongo
ing relationship with the task force
and the police to solve this prob
lem, Brown said.
Weston Morri 11, dean of student
life, said a possible solution would
be to get students and police to
gether more frequently.
If students had a better relation
ship with police they probably
wouldn’t be as violent towards
them, McCrae said.
“The ground work is already
there. We just need to take the next
couple steps,” he said.

He said the administration had
said it did not have enough re
sources to go forth on several rec
ommendations.
Mia Tuan, a sociology professor
who teaches the Race Relations se
ries on campus has the unique op
portunity to interact directly with
students on the issue of race.
She explained that white stu
dents and students of color often
speak a different language due to
their backgrounds.
She tries to open dialogue in her
classroom, but she said 10 weeks
is not enough.
“I couldn’t keep doing it day in
and day out without signs of
hope,” she said. “The biggest re
ward is seeing students who took
the class for a multicultural re
quirement stick around. ”
Julie Fox, a sociology professor
who teaches social justice and is
active with several farmworker
advocacy groups, explained to the
crowd the basis of institutional
ized environmental, political and
social racism in our daily lives.
“ Look at the balance of power in
every historical system and see
where we are situated today,” Fox
said.
She said there is a shifting of
power as corporations and money
influence the curriculum and de
cisions universities make.
The final speaker, Carla Gary,
director of the Office of Multicul
tural Affairs, challenged the audi
ence to go home and talk to their
families, roommates about race.
“Let's add a person of color and
stir. Let’s celebrate Powwow,”
Gary said. “I have real problems
about celebrating diversity be
cause everything we celebrate we
do once. The things that we honor
we institutionalize. We need to
see through new eyes.”
She said the University is at a
crossroads about affirmative action
and the University has to talk about
the impact of affirmative action.
“We are south oflnitiative 200 and
north of Proposition 209," she said.
She stressed the need for diver
sity in the classroom. Not to make
students of color feel better, but it
is critical that everybody see this
panel is what faculty looks like.
“We talk about diversity and
talk about it in terms of number of
bodies. But don’t change very
much the vehicle with which peo
ple are placed. Now if you don’t
change the vehicle, than bringing
more people is not going to change
much of anything.”
Mario Sifuentez, a member of
MEChA on the panel explained
his frustration at not being heard.
"The communication ties are
not there,” Sifuentez said. “We
have a voice and we speak loud.
The problem occurs when we’re
not heard.”
