Events Continued from Pagel “It’s important for people of this university to know about it. ” On Wednesday, the JSU will host a Jewish Culture Night. Peo ple will have the opportunity to feast on vegetarian Middle East ern food and learn Israeli dance steps. A local band, the Klezmo nauts, will perform. The dance will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the EMU Fir Room. Chip Cohen, a violinist with the Klezmonaut band, feels his music reflects a celebration of cultural heritage. “Our band chose the name Klezmonauts because we play klezmer music,” Cohen said. “This type of music has been around for centuries." He said the music is an impro visation, like jazz, and it is a mix ture of folk songs and hymns. It is derived from numerous ethnic descents, including Russian, Gypsy and Polish. In previous years Jewish Cul ture Night has been very success ful, and Poplack expects this year to be a success. “This dance is a big event,” Poplack said. “In the past, we’ve had anywhere from 200 to 250 people attend. This evening promises to be fun.” The final event celebrating Jewish Culture Month is Rosh Chodesh, a new moon festival. This festival occurs on the night of every new moon, and it gives women an opportunity to come together and reflect on their spir ituality. Rosh Chodesh is a holiday that has historically honored the fertility of women said Angela Favero, co-director for the JSU. “Rosh Chodesh is a holiday that literally means 'Head of the Month,’” Favero said. "During Rosh Chodesh, women come to gether to celebrate being women. They support one another by honoring themselves, their fami lies, their mothers and other wonderful, unforgettable women.” Favero adds that Rosh Chodesh is a ritualistic experi ence. “The primary purpose of Rosh Chodesh is to provide a sense of renewal,” Favero said. “Women replenish themselves through food, and they anoint themselves through means of candles and oils. These practices are done as a way to provide unity and to getherness to the group.” Rosh Chodesh will be celebrat ed on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Women who wish to attend should go to the Hillel at 1059 Hilyard St. “This celebration is a time for women to celebrate their identi ty,” Favero said. “They check in on each other and support one another.” Ctww Adventure™ Camp Adventure™ is a non-profit, youth services program.
