It happened in the first quarter, about
the way everyone expected it to.
On the opening possession of the
game, Akili Smith quickly moved the
Pacific-10 Conference’s best offense down
to the Arizona State 5-yard line to set the
scene for one of the great moments in Ore
gon football history.
On first and goal, tailback Herman Ho
Ching ran inside for a gain of one. On sec
ond and goal, Ho-Ching powered inside
once more for a gain of two. One third and
goal, in a scoreless game, Smith took the
snap from the center, stepped up in the
pocket to avoid the Sun Devil rush, stutter
stepped at the line of scrimmage after find
ing that his two primary targets on the play
were well covered, bounced off the right
tackle and fired a bullet to fullback Chris
Young — who appeared to be knocked off
his feet by the force of the ball — in the cor
ner of the end zone.
It was the kind of play that we’ve pretty
much come to expect from Smith, who
eclipsed the names of Van Brocklin, Fouts,
Miller, Musgrave and O'Neil on that play
with his 23rd touchdown pass of the sea
son.
It was by no means his most impressive
touchdown throw of the season — it wasn’t
even his most impressive of the game —
but it was one of those perfectly simple
plays that showcases all the minutia of
Smith’s game: the athleticism, the natural
instincts, the ability to make split-second

After Saturday sgame, Akili
Smith holds the Oregon record
for the most single-season
touchdown passes

Revenge was sweet for the Oregon foot
ball team on Saturday.
A year after allowing 405 yards and
five touchdowns on the ground at Ari
zona State, the No. 20 Ducks held the Sun
Devils to just 117 rushing yards as Ore
gon won 51-19 in front of 43,723 fans at
Autzen Stadium.
You could call it
payback if you want
to,” Oregon quarter
back Akili Smith said.
“Last year we went
down there and they
basically blew us out.”
The Ducks turned
the tables on the Sun Devils, who won
51-31 in Tempe last season. This time it
was Oregon that put up more than 50
points, as well as 397 yards and four
touchdown passes from Smith.
It was the fifth game of the season in
which the Ducks scored 50 or more
points, but it was the first since a 51-29
dismantling of Washington State on Oct.
10.
"It was back to the way we were play
ing earlier this season,” Oregon head
coach Mike Bellotti said. “Having a run
ning threat in Herman Ho-Ching helped
us, because he got a lot of tough yards to
day.”
And maybe too many, Bellotti conced
ed. The Oregon offense stalled on three
consecutive drives in the red zone, with
in the Arizona State 20-yard line, in the
fourth quarter.
Other than that, it was business as
usual.
Oregon took a 24-7 lead into the sec
ond quarter on three Smith touchdown
passes and Nathan Villegas’ 38-yard field
goal.
After Jason Cooper ret urned the open
ing kickoff 48 yards to the Sun Devils’ 48
yard line, the Ducks used six rushes and a
27-yard pass to LaCorey Collins to set up
their first score of the afternoon, a 4-yard
screen pass to fullback Chris Young.

Men’s basketball starts the season strong with win
The Ducks dominated their first
regular-season game against
Coppin State with a 77-62
victory at McArthur Court
By Tim Pyle
Oregon Daily Emerald
In opening the regular season with a 77-62
victory over Coppin State, the Oregon men’s
basketball team successfully displayed its
changes in both composition and produc
tion for 7,196 fansat McArthur Court.
According to second-year head coach
Ernie Kent, the Ducks of a season ago would
not have pulled out a win against the Eagles
this early in the season.
“You’re going against a team that’s very
solid in their foundation and what they do
defensively,” Kent said. “Obviously, [they
have] two outstanding guards with a lot of
experience and a coach who has had a lot of
success within their program. When you
look at that, I thought for us to weather all of
that and really hang in there and get some
things done at key times, it was a pretty good
win forus.”
Forwards Alex Scales and A.D. Smith
paved the way for Oregon with 19 points
apiece as the Ducks (1-0) beat the six-time
Mid-Eastern Athletic Con
ference champion Eagles
(0-2) in the first-ever meet
ing between the two
schools. Coppin State
guards Fred Warrick and
Jorge Cajigas were the only
Eagles to score in double
figures, combining for 42
points on just 12-of-31 shooting from the
floor.
Smith, who also grabbed a game-high
nine rebounds, and Scales teamed with fel
low starters Mike Carson, Terik Brown and
Mike McShane to provide Oregon with all
but seven of its total points. Guards Brown
