Mohr is a leading historian of 19th-century American social policy. His lecture, entitled “How Did Medical Malpractice Become Such a Huge Problem in the United States?” is spon r sored by the College of Arts and Sciences and is open to the pub lic. Mohr began teaching at the University in 1992. He is consid ered an expert on abortion policy and has twice testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on the subject. Mohr is also the author of a book, Doctors and the Law. CAS awards three distin guished professorships per school year from the humanities, physical science and social sci ences, Candidates are nominated by their departments and select ed by a committee made up of current endowed chair holders and emeriti faculty. Other recipients of the distin guished professorships are Tom Givon, professor of linguistics, and Frank Stahl, professor of bi ology. Givon will lecture Feb. 22, and Stahl will lecture April 20. CIP seeking lunch buddy volunteers How would you like to eat lunch with someone new? The Community Internship Program, located in the EMU Breezeway, is offering an op portunity for students to volun teer for the Committed Partners for Youth Lunch Buddies pro gram, Student volunteers will eat lunch once a week with an at risk child from either Willag illespie Elementary school in Eugene or Braton Elementary school in Springfield. Students can choose an ele mentary school student from the first to fifth grades. For the rest of the school year, students will spend one hour per week visiting and eating with the child during lunch break. The purpose Community tram gi of the program is to act as a mentor to I-Z..I “““ hopefully de velop a meaningful relation ship that the child may not otherwise have. The chil dren’s parents have autho rized them to be part of the program. There are children at both schools, 15 at Braton Elemen tary, who have the permission slip signed but have not found a lunch buddy. There is a screening process before students can participate. 17-year-old female shot at 13th and Pearl A 17-year-old female Eugene resident who police said was working for a drug dealer was shot early Sunday morning neai 13th Avenue and Pearl Street The motive appears to be robbery police said. Shortly after the shooting, twc Eugene police detectives arrested Justin Cooper Morris, 22, of Eu gene. He was charged with first degree robbery and first-degree assault and lodged at the Lane County Jail. The female, who sustained a shoulder wound from the gunshot, was lodged at Skipworth Juvenile Detention Center for hindering prosecution and possession of LSD. Homicide suspect arrested Saturday Eugene Police Officer Jeff Drullinger arrested homicide sus pect Phillip Bates Saturday evening on Highway 99N near Pattison Lane. Bates was wanted in connection with the shooting death of one woman and the gun shot wound to another that oc curred Thursday night at an apartment compiex in West Eu gene. Drullinger spotted Bates at 7:22 p.m. walking in the opposite di rection down Highway 99N. He turned his car around and arrest ed Bates without incident. Bates was carrying a firearm at the time.
