ence championships if the sea

Washington State, Stanford coaches
admit to forward thinking
Two teams who haven’t
thought about qualifying for the
BCS for a couple months are
Washington State and Stanford,
tied for last in the Pac-10 with
identical 0-6 records.
Both teams’ coaches admitted
recently that they have already be
gun to look toward next season.
Each will attempt to use these last
few games to gain momentum for
1999.
“You have to, in some regards,
look at it as a springboard," Car
dinal head coach Tyrone Will
ingham said. “But at the same
time you have to make sure your
seniors leave on a good note.”
The Cougars have gone from
being the Pac-lO’s champion last
season to a bottom-feeder in
1998. Washington State head
coach Mike Price echoed Will
ingham’s sentiments.
“This last defeat [41-7 to Ari
zona] eliminated us from any
minute possibility for a bowl
game, so it really is a chance for
our seniors to pull up their boot
straps and go out a winner.”
Price cited Arizona’s four
game win streak to end last sea
son, and subsequent 9-1 record
this season, as proof that momen
tum can carry over from season
to season even considering the
long summer off.
The Wildcats lost 35-34 to the
Cougars last season, then reeled
of wins over Oregon State, Cali
fornia and Arizona State before
beating New Mexit:o 20-14 in the
Insight.com Bowl. Arizona then
won five straight to begin this
season before losing to UCLA.
"So if Arizona can do it and
build on it, that gives us a role
model and something to build
on,” Price said.
Asked if the 1997 Cougars,
who qualified for their first Rose
Bowl in nearly seven decades,
were a flash in the pan, Price got
more than a little defensive.
“1 don’t think it was a fluke,”
he said. “Everyone in the confer
ence will tell you the same thing:
we had a real good football team.
We intend to do it again. And it
won’t take another 67 years.”
Bruins to make up Sept. 26 Miami
game cancelled by hurricane
UCLA will get one more
chance to lose that spot in the na
tional title game.
The Bruins will play Miami on
Dec. 5 to make up for the
schools’ cancelled game of Sept.
26. The game was cancelled be
cause of ‘incliment weather” in
the form of a hurricane.
Toledo said earlier this seaosn
that, although a loss would cost
his team a shot at the title, he
wlecomes the chance to play in
Florida.
‘Big Game' may not live up to name
The annual Big Game between
Cal and Stanford, shceduled for
Nov. 21, may not be so big this
season, especially when the
Golden Bears have the ball.
Cal currently ranks last in the
conference in total and scoring

UO's Bidweil, UCLA's McNown
among Pac-10’s honorees
UCLA quarterback Cade
McNown was named Pac-10
player of the week Monday,
along with USC tackle Aaron
Williams and Oregon punter
Josh Bidweil.
McNown completed 23 of 37
passes, including four
touchdowns, leading UCLA to a
41-34 win at Oregon State.
Williams recovered two
fumbles, returning one 18 yards
for a touchdown, and had a
quarterback sack in USC’s 34-9
victory over Stanford.
Bidweil averaged 47.7 yards
on six punts — including a
career-long 69-yarder — as
Oregon downed Washington 27
22 on Saturday.
