teams to a barrage of questions
ranging from biology to poetry.
The top four teams will partici
pate in the campus finals at 6
p.m. on Thursday in the EMU
Ballroom. The winning team will
then go on to the regional compe
tition on Feb. 19 and 20 on cam
pus. The Duck team may even
get a chance to make it to the na
tional competition at the Univer
sity of Florida in April. The last

the national competition was in
1993.
Free clinic shows use
of avalanche beacons
Imagine skiing in the Alps
and sliding down the smooth
untouched snow lightly under
your feet. All of the sudden you
hear a thunderous sound and
discover the ground slipping
around you in an avalanche.
In a full burial avalanche inci
dent, search and rescue by com
panions is the only real chance of
survival and using an avalanche
beacon can help missing skiers
be found.
The University Outdoor Pro
gram will hold a free clinic on
Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. to educate
students on the proper use of
avalanche transceivers.
The Ortovox avalanche beacon
is just one part of the Allard and
Casey Memorial Safety Library.
The safety library is the first na
tionwide library started in 1995
that allows students to rent out
avalanche beacons, cell phones,
snow shovels, radios and other
safety devices.
The library is named after two
students who died climbing the
North Sister mountain.
The clinic will cover basic
avalanche search and rescue and
use of the transceivers.
