A second neighbor helped con tain the flames but was not pre sent when help arrived. “The guy had a garden hose and did a heck of a job,” he said. “They just had the initial flames and stuff knocked down.” Teal, a University sophomore who lives at a house next to the quad complex, said he original ly thought he was seeing steam from a dryer in a laundry ma chine. After knocking on the room’s door, Teal determined that smoke was billowing with in the complex. Teal’s girl friend, Brooke Nehrkorn, called 9-1-1 to notify authorities of the blaze. “I saw smoke and flames com ing out of a broken window,” he said. He added the other uniden tified neighbor knocked down the room’s door to help subdue the fire. "I used a hose to spray through the door and window,” he said. “We thought the entire building was on fire; we thought the whole thing was gonna go.” The fire caused heavy damage to room 104, leaving only a smoking mattress and charred debris of the resident’s belong ings. Hern said fire damage was not only contained to room 104, as Michael Bumbam/Emerald A smoldering mattress was one of the only remnants of a late evening fire at Campus Quads that contributed to Saturday's riot. flames blistered paint on the door of the quad’s common kitchen area and water soaked the length of the kitchen. In addition to the EFD’s pres ence, at least four EPD squad car units arrived at the fire scene and cordoned off the corner of 17th Avenue and Alder Street. Police on the scene had to stave off an increasing number of curious bystanders, neighbors and people who were in the area as a result of an earlier incident between police and a University fraternity. Shortly before the blaze broke out, EPD Officer Steve Williams said additional squad cars re sponded to an incident at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house at 791 E. 15th Avenue. Police tried to evacuate the house, shut down the party and issued a handful of citations to intoxicated minors, he said. A large crowd of bystanders in the fraternity’s vicinity then be gan to throw rocks and bottles at the officers, Williams said. The altercation between the police and a crowd that eventual ly swelled up to 100 people led to rioting and police patrols until approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. ODE Classifieds...
