The Mexican holiday is a time for

Di'a de los Muertos, translated as the Day
of the Dead, is a festive tradition of Mexico
celebrated by students for the past 17 years
on campus.
The holiday, which began Sunday and
runs through this morning, is a day to honor
dead loved ones and a time to be with family
and friends.
“Di'a de los Muertos is a very important
holiday in Mexico,” said David Jaimes, a
University student who moved to Oregon at
age 9 from Mexico City. "It is a very impor
tant day for family.”
MEChA will display an altar exhibit to
honor the day in the EMU River Room.
There will also be an event with poetry, mu
sic, a slide show and an explanation of the
celebration.
A papier-mache workshop will also be
provided at the exhibit and will be given by
Mexican artist Mauricio Hernandez.
In Mexico, the festivities start in the early
morning hours of Nov.l, and all day is spent
baking and cooking foods, collecting and ar
ranging flowers and making gifts and pre
sents for dead loved ones.
At night families venture to cemeteries
and stay at the graves of ancestors they are
honoring. They adorn graves with food,
flowers, gifts and sentimental items in the
belief that the spirits of the dead come to life
on this day and are able to be with friends
and loved ones. In the morning, the holiday
is over, and they return home.
But the Day of the Dead isn’t just about
honoring ancestry, it is also about honoring
Caesar Chavez, said Alma Estrada, internal
director of MEChA, the Movimiento Estudi
antil Chicanos de Aztlan, the University’s
Chicano student movement group.
“Caesar Chavez is a very important leader
for the Chicano student movement,” Estrada
said. “He played a big part in the movement,
which started in the ’60s and was in line
with the Civil Rights Movements.
"...We want to honor him [Chavez] for his
unselfishness and for his caring of all peo
ple, regardless of race,” Estrada said.
Chavez was a co-founder of the United
Farmworkers movement, which developed
from the Chicano movement in the 1960s.
He fought for basic human rights and farm
worker rights.

hibit, contact MEChA at 346-3508.
