It’s like the National Football
League playoffs — only for musi
cians.
Sonic Xplosion ‘98: Final
Round will take place this Satur
day night at the WOW Hall. This
battle-of-the-bands contest, which
is in its third year, will feature the
two finalists of the year-long com
petition, Drive and Moth.
“It’s just like the Super Bowl,”
said John Boldt, the owner of local
label Elemental Records, which
co-sponsors the event.
Sonic Xplosion is a showcase,
talent search and competition for
regional bands, Boldt said.
The selection process takes al
most nine months from start to fin
ish. Each year Elemental Records
receives more than one hundred
submissions by regional bands,
Boldt said. The three employees of
Elemental then listen to each tape
and narrow them down to 12 final
ists and one alternate. From there,
the performances start.
Four rounds, held on the first
Friday of each month, feature
three bands each. The winner of
each round advances to the semi
finals, and two winners from the
semi-finals square off in the finals.
Elemental employees judge the
bands on four categories: originali
ty, musicianship, presentation
and audience response.
