Dracula Continued from Page 66 ety of musical styles, such as the tango and gypsy music. Parts of the score feature layers of music and special effects pieced together and played backwards. Bennett’s choreography utilizes different places, not just scenes, to convey the story of “Dracula,” said Grannan. The ballet is per formed on a three-tiered set, with action taking place on different levels simultaneously. For exam ple, one level features the bed room of Mina, one of the story’s leading ladies, while Dracula lurks in the level below. “It’s kind of like Ringling Bros, [circus] sometimes,” Bennett said of the simultaneous action. Bennett is internationally ac claimed for his work with the First Chamber Dance Company of New York, his own company that he ran for 19 years. In 1974, he was the first American to win the choreography award at the Inter national Ballet Competition in Bulgaria. He won the same award two years later in Tokyo. Courtesy photo Dracula’ choreographer Charles Bennet researched and based the Hult Center perfor mance on Bram Stoker's original novel right down to the characters' fangs and nails. “IBennett] is a real mar. of the ater,” Grannan said. "As a director and dancer, he’s pretty formidable.” The combination of staging, lighting, music and choreography combine for a very attractive per formance, Grannan said. “You don’t have to be in a par ticularly violent world to be scared,” he said. Tickets do remain for the perfor mance, but according to Grannan, they may sell out quickly. A “Duck Buck” is available for 15 percent off the ticket price if bought through the EMU ticket office. Carson Hall to host dance o’ scares The University will sponsor a costume party Saturday night in the residence hall By Amy Boytz Oregon Daily Emerald This Halloween there will be a party that most likely will not get busted by the police. “Eat, Drink and Be Scary,” a Hal loween dance co-sponsored by Uni versity Housing and the Residence Hall Association, will take place in Carson Dining Center starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday. The event is open to all students with student I.D. The planners of the dance hope it will provide a safe and fun op portunity for students on Hal loween night. There will be dancing, music, food and contests, including a swing dance contest. Also on the agenda is a costume contest, with prizes to be awarded to the winners. The goal of the dance is to give students a place to celebrate the holiday without feeling pressure to drink alcohol, said Heather Har vey, program assistant for the Uni versity Inn. “It’s basically an opportunity for people who don’t want to drink on Halloween to go some where,” she said. The party is being funded by the P. A.R.T. Y. Fund (Promoting Alco hol Responsibility Throughout the Year). This fund, created last year by the Office of Student Life, allocates funds for alcohol-free student events. Similar events have been held in the past, and coordinators hope this dance will be just as successful. "We hope to fill the house,” said Katie Bryant, assistant director of residence life. “(The dance] is a good alternative thing with a fun environment. Hopefully people will come in costume,” she said. Also that evening, the Office of Student Life will show the cult film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the EMU Ballroom. Stu dents will be encouraged to attend the film as the dance is ending, Bryant said. “Together, it makes for a nice slate of things to do on Saturday night,” she said. “There are alter natives to the party scene. And it’s just dam fun.” EhWild We’ve got just what you need for Halloween Eugene Springfield 1180 West 11th 2289 Olympic St. 705 South Seneca 501 Main St. 110 East 11th 2699 Roosevelt Blvd 2345 West Broadway yt>yruu COSTUMES AMERICAN MATTRESS 003802 MANUFACTURING / year same as cash.
