Depeche Mode
Continued from Page7A
version of “Personal Jesus.”
And it is through these obscure
remixes that Depeche Mode really
shines. The re-engineered songs
are complex and unique, often
making tracks “new” enough to
fall in love with all over again.
But then again, the passing mu
sic enthusiast will never miss
“Grungy Gonads.” For him or her,
"86>98” is more than enough to
satisfy—an overabundance of de
licious music now made easily ac
cessible.
This actually isn’t the first time
Depeche Mode has made its music
more accessible. In 1989, the band
released "Depeche Mode 101,”
which was exactly that: an intro
ductory course to the band’s
sound. The two-CD set recorded
live at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl cata
loged the fan-favorite songs to date.
A listener can actually get a taste
of this live-album predecessor in
the final track of “Singles 86>98,”
“Everything Counts.” At the end of
the song, which is taken directly
from “101,” a capacity crowd
chants the “Everything Counts”
chorus for more than a minute af
ter David Gahan has finished
singing, epitomizing the adoration
Depeche Mode fans feel for their
band.
And early this December, ador
ing fans in the Pacific Northwest
will get a chance to chant again.
For the first time in four years,
Depeche Mode is promoting its
music with a major worldwide
tour. The band makes a stop at the
Rose Garden in Portland on Dec. 6
and at the Key Arena in Seattle the
following night. Tickets for both
shows are still available through
Ticketmaster charge-by-phone
and the arenas’ box offices.
While the prospect of finally
getting to see Depeche Mode live
is gratifying, after pouring $30 into
these latest CD releases and anoth
er $32 to $45 into the December
concert, fans might find a smol
dering hole in their wallets and a
bittersweet taste in their mouths.
