UCLA (5-0, 3-0) won the coin
toss and elected to start the extra
period on defense, then shut the
Ducks down. Linebacker Bren
don Ayanbadejo sacked Smith
on Oregon’s first two plays before
the quarterback threw first in
complete, then into the hands of
Bruin defensive back Ryan
Roques to give Sailer a chance at
redemption.
Ducks tailback Reuben
Droughns, the Pac-lO’s leading
rusher coming into the afternoon,
fumbled four times, the last com
ing with 2:45 remaining and Ore
gon driving to victory. With the
game tied 31-31 and the Ducks at
the UCLA 39-yard line, Bruin
linebacker Tony White recovered
Droughns’ third lost fumble of the
day on the UCLA 40-yard line.
"That was a crucial play right
there, when I came in the last time
and fumbled, that hurt me real
bad,” Droughns said. “It was defi
nitely a roller-coaster game for
me, but I’ve got to try keep my
head up and try to become
stronger next week.”
UCLA quarterback Cade Mc
Nown, a leading candidate for
the Heisman Trophy, put the
Bruins ahead 38-31 on their next
play from scrimmage, a 60-yard
bomb to Danny Farmer. Oregon
cornerback Eric Edwards ap
peared to be with Farmer step for
step before falling at the five-yard
line, where Farmer caught the
pass and stretched into the end
zone.
“I didn’t see the ball as soon as I
should have, and then our feet
just got tangled up and he made
the play,” Edwards said.
Smith then marched the Ducks
65 yards on 11 plays to tie the
game on Griffin’s touchdown
catch. Smith was four of seven
passing on the drive, including
three completions to Griffin.
On the day, Smith was 15 of 37
for 221 yards and three touch
downs, with one interception, on
the Ducks' final play in overtime.
"He led this team to near victo

roller-coaster game for

ry,” Bellotti said. “When you take
a team down repeatedly in the
fourth quarter with hardly any
time and make those plays, that's
what you expect the best quarter
back in the nation to do. All this
talk about the Heisman, he’s liv
ing up to that.”
McNown lived up to his Heis
man billing as well, throwing for
395 yards and three scores on 20
of 36 passing. He gave Sailer a
chance to win the game in regula
tion by completing a 53-yard
bomb to backup quarterback
Drew Bennett that put UCLA on
the Oregon three-yard line.
“You call it a hail mary, we call
it max rebound, but whatever
term you use it’s just send a
bunch of guys down there and
hope we come up with it,” Mc
Nown said.
McNown and the Bruins
seemed to be in danger of losing
early in the fourth quarter, after
Smith hooked up with Tony Hart
ley on a 36-yard strike that gave
Oregon a 31-24 lead, but Jermaine
Lewis, fresh off a one-game sus
pension, scored from two yards
out to even the score at 31-31. Af
ter Oregon went three-and-out,
Sailer had a field goal blocked for
the two teams’ only real scoring
chance before Droughns’ fourth
fumble allowed the Bruins to tie
the game.
UCLA jumped out to a quick
14-0 lead on two touchdowns by
freshman DeShaun Foster, who
scored on a 51-yard reception and
a four-yard run. Droughns fum
bled away Oregon's opening pos
session at the UCLA 11-yard line.
The Ducks got on the score
board with 1:36 left in the first
quarter, when Smith hit Jed
Weaver for a 20-yard touchdown.
UCLA countered with a Sailer
field goal and a six-yard Farmer
touchdown reception, then ap
peared to be headed for a 31-7
halftime lead when Oregon defen
sive end Saul Patu recorded his
first career interception.
Smith closed the score to 24-14
with a two-yard touchdown run
with seven second remaining in
the half.
Oregon scored the game’s only
third-quarter points on an eight
yard touchdown run by Droughns
and a 27-yard Nathan Villegas
field goal, his 11th conversion in
11 attempts this season.

BIRTH CONTROL YOU THINK
ABOUT JUST 4 TIMES A YEAR
Many women wish they didn’t
have to remember their birth
control every day. If you’re one of
them, you might want to know
about Depo-Provera.
Some benefits of Depo-Provera.
Depo-Provera is an injection
you get from your doctor or
nurse, every three months. When
taken as scheduled —just 4 times
a year — it’s more than 99%
effective. So it’s one of the most
reliable contraceptives available.
Depo-Provera has been used for
many years by millions of women
in countries like England, France
and Sweden. And Depo-Provera
is reversible. Once you stop using
it, you can usually become
pregnant within one year. Depo
Provera from Upjohn is a
prescription product that costs
about the same per year as birth
control pills.
But before you consider any
birth control method, you should
discuss the risks and benefits with
your healthcare professional.
Some of the side effects of Depo
Provera.
Most women experience
irregular or unpredictable
menstrual bleeding and weight
gain. With continued use. many
women stop having monthly
periods, but your healthcare
professional can explain why this
happens and that it is not a
medical problem. Use of Depo
Provera may be associated with a
decrease in the amount of mineral
stored in your bones, which may
be among the risk factors for
development of osteoporosis.
Depo-Provera is not right for
every woman.
Women with a family or
personal history of breast cancer,
blood clots, liver disease, or those
who think they might be
pregnant, should not use Depo
Provera.
Remember. Depo-Provera does
not protect against sexually
transmitted diseases.
But it does provide highly
reliable birth control you only
have to think about 4 times a
year. If you have any questions or
concerns, talk to your healthcare
professional.
