Kansas City beats Seattle 17-6 after rain delay of nearly an hour By Doug Tucker The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On a rainy night when violent storms suspended play for almost an hour, the winning team should have been the one with Watters. But Rich Gannon, atoning for three lost fumbles, scored on a 4 yard run and connected with An dre Rison on an 80-yard touch down Sunday night as Kansas City beat Seattle 17-6 following a first-half downpour and a 54 minute delay. As torrential rains pelted the field and lightning flashed across the nighttime sky, NFL officials halted play at 8:14 CDT, with 7:10 left in the second quarter and the score knotted 3-all. Halftime was cut in half to six minutes. Weather officials said 3.66 inches of rain fell in downtown Kansas City in a two-hour period starting just before kickoff, but rainfall totals of 6 inches or more were registered across the area. Only a light rain fell most of the second half, but the muddy condi tions contributed to sloppier play, including two lost fumbles by Seattle running back Ricky Wat ters and five for the Chiefs (4-1), one short of the 29-year-old team record. The torrential, chaotic condi tions may have been the reason the Seahawks (3-2) lost quarter back Warren Moon, who was in jured on the final play before the delay and replaced by Friesz. Moon, 41, ran the ball for a 1-yard loss and bruised his ribs. The Chiefs handed the Sea hawks several scoring opportuni ties as Gannon, making his fourth start in place of the injured Elvis Grbac, gaveup the slippery ball on the Chiefs’ 17-and 7-yard lines.
